XS650 Thermometer-Dipsticks

DogBunny,
I've been wondering what kinda maximum temps people were seeing with these.
Temps in the high 70's I'm reading around 275 degrees at the end of a ride(32 miles) to work.

Fit and finish are great. With no need to tweek the stick because of rubbing.

weekendrider:
It would be great if owners of ThermoDipSticks would post their max temps in this thread and maybe start a dialogue.

I personally think you have cause to be concerned. From your high post count I would guess that you know what's going on with your bike, but I wonder if you are lean?

I am still collecting my own data, and I will post it here as I get it, but for now, you may want to look at posts #27 and #24 which I made in this thread. My personal max is 260, and that was reached after 40 miles at 70 MPH in 112 degree weather last summer.

There is also a long thread here:
http://xs650temp.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=EngineStock&action=display&thread=16693
in which owners have posted their numbers.

I have some anecdotal data to provide.

I recently changed out my carb boots because my MikesXS ones SUCKED. One of the vacuum barbs came completely out, and upon inspection after removing them I saw that they were torn to shreds. I installed my new JBM boots and decided to drop the needle by one clip (to the center position) to experiment with fuel economy and I thought that the mixture might be a tad rich now that I didn't have any air leaks.

I've noticed that my temps have increased by 10-15 degrees. I typically ride around 70-75mph (~4500RPM) and with the previous jetting I was maxing out right around 250 degrees (dont remember ambient temps, sorry!). Since the rejetting I am now getting around 260-275 at the same speed and RPMs.

I will be moving the clip down one slot again to lower the oil temps with summer approaching. BTW, its a completely rebuilt and rephased '81 special with pods and open pipes.

I've got 100 miles now on my 750cc rephased Shell #1 ported head engine, and I think I've topped out at 200. Have to pay closer attention next time I have it out - was too busy grinning ear to ear.

I'm running the aftermarket Heiden oil cooler thing from MikesXS.

Had a couple of these off Dogbunny now! Fantastic customer service and nothing is too much trouble! Shipping is fast and I am in the UK!

Well done on a cracking little product! No XS should be without one!

Thanks again!

I got mine a while back and so far so good. Been a hot summer so far and I've always been curious how hot my engine has been getting. Great item!

THank you Dogbunny-- works nice and it's a good feeling knowing you aren't running your engine too hot. So far it has amazed me at how cool the bike stays even when riding freeway speeds for 15-20miles at a time... very pleased, thanks

Can't remember if this oil temp dipstick was made to screw all the way in to check oil level or just rest in place like a stock one to check oil level. Anyone know?
jefft

Got mine in a couple days......its cold as balls here so no chance to ride but just looking at it is good enough.

Damn nice product, looks great and Im sure its going to work even better. Ive been wondering if Im to lean, to rich.....etc. While this wont fully answer my question it will put me on the right track.

Ive got a very similar setup on my Victory Vision........but it cost 2x as much and isnt as well made.

Everybody should have one of these.

Only complaint I have with mine is that the oil level on the stick is extremly hard to see especially on a fresh oil change.

tmb99, my host server was down for a few hours, but it is now up again:

Thanks to everyone for all of the favorable messages and support.
My original mold sets were beginning to get a little tired and ragged, so I recently finished making a new set of molds, and I am now getting very clean, crisp, good-looking castings. I am now using a new, superior mold material, plus my mold-making skills have improved a lot. I will probably raise my price by a few dollars in a couple of weeks, so now would be a good time to order. I apologize for having to raise the price, but there has never been very much profit in these units. Most of the cost goes into the thermometers, and not to me. This project has always been more of a labor of love than anything else.
Thanks again to everyone, -- William

Just got one of these in the mail up in Alberta yesterday. Mail took its sweet time to deliver, but that is usually the case up here.

Great product. Fits well. Orientation is spot-on. Looks great and even better; completely functional. A perfect solution!

Thanks William for the excellent communication. I would recommend everyone give him their business.

I just got mine. I love it. Looks cool. Very happy with it so far. I recomend getting this thermometer to everyone without one. My only concern is guage theft while parked out and about. Thanks for the quick shipping William!!!

Just put in a order for the ThermoDip DB, suspicion of running lean. Cant wait to try this out!
Thanks for the order!
I've read through this and was wondering is why not degrees Celsius ?
Because I'm an American.
Heiden Tuning makes a Celsius XS650 dipstick-thermometer.
