the bike is a 77d, my valves ping and ting at startup and then once the bike gets warm and is revd over 3k the tinging goes away. ive checked and rechecked my adjustments and readjusted and rechecked numerous times now and the sound just drives me nuts. the adjustments say .006 on the ex and .002 on the intake btw:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Generally it takes that long to get full oil pressure up to the head.

I run 20-50 w motorcycle oil, that also is important.

A little ticking tells you that the clearance is okay. That is a good thing. Too tight is not good.

Have a great summer.

If you haven't changed out the front cam chain guide, that could be the source of the noise. Mine did the same thing and this is what I found inside .....

The rubber strip was partially detached. It's a common problem on these if it's the original part. My best guess is that loose strip was flapping and ticking at start-up until oil got splashed up and quenched the noise.

5twins,

does your manuals say 2 and 6 for valve clearances for his 77D model?

I thought 4 and 6 but was wrong once before. ha ha

It depends on the year. Some years, Yamaha did call for .002" on the intakes. But it makes no sense. The motors didn't change, just Yamaha's spec did. Personally, I think .002" is too small. I don't go any smaller than .003" on the intakes. Exhausts are fine at .006", that was the spec given for most years. Just the intakes seemed to get spec changes several times. And like I said, I don't know why Yamaha did that. My '78 was speced at .004" for the intakes but they ticked like crazy at that setting. Closing them up to .003" made all the difference in the world. Amazing the effect just that .001" had on the noise level.

the exhaust valves make the chatter the intakes seem fine.

Have you pulled and inspected the tips of your adjusting screws? They get all beat up and dimpled, making an accurate measurement difficult. What you think is a .006" setting may actually be a bit larger. If they do look beat up, maybe using a .005" setting on the exhausts would be quieter.

Try looking at your cam. Kind of hard, but maybe you have a lubrication problem on one of the cams/rockers.

Probably not but always worth a look.

As you know it's an air cooled beast that likes to let you know it's alive. ha ha

I run 2 and 4 and no tick on my 77D ,saw a video were a yamaha tech set all years to this spec but the procedure was different than in book,i did it his way,way easier and no problems,go to u tube and type in yamaha xs650 valave adjustment and see for your self.
The 72 thru 75 was speced at same but with different procedure using timing marks ect

Mine used to 'tick' all the time. Solution was using the swivel foot adjuster's. All's quiet on the home front now.
