I am on a 600 mile roadtrip (300 each way) at the moment, and my hands were bruised like crazy when I got to my destination!!!! And I stopped to rest etc every hour. Of course the speed limit here is 75mph so imagine 5 hours of that....no rephase, modified sprockets, or 5th overdrive gear. They're still sore 3 days later and I'm leaving for home later today

I brought spare oil, socket set (which includes allen sockets..very handy), few wrenches, screwdriver, pliers, wire cutters/strippers, zip ties, spare fuses, my cell phone and AAA card ;)

^Bettter to have and not need than to need and not have :)

My bro gave me a aaa card he got in a 2fer deal, but it wasn't the advanced version that covers bikes, luckily :) And I wrangeled the motel where I spent a few day down to a fee lower than the aaa discount, and they wouldn't go any lower so...

So I am planning to take a trip on my 81' from NYC to FL. I just rebuilt my engine, new ignition, new PMA, new carbs and oilfirlter/cooler kit. I never took such a long distance ride so aside from bringing a few extra oil filters I am not sure what else to take with me. Maybe a valve tools? Has anyone done a trip like this and encountered problems with their carbs or motor or anything else? Sorry if this is not the place to ask a question like this

If you are going to be on I-64 and or passing close by newport news, let me know. You're welcome to stop in for a checkup and tool usage at my place.

Did you have to use any of that?

Yes, actually I did! Speedo drive cable came unscrewed, pliers tightened that. Oil leaked more than I was comfortable with during parked times so before I started the trek home I added some oil. Zip ties kept my bags secure, wire cutters cut the zip ties when I needed them off, AAA card gave me hotel discount ;)

geezer story

In 75 I dug a 71 XS650 out of a snow bank in February, bought it, got it running working in an unheated garage in Wisconsin. Strapped a sleeping bag on the back and with two buddies we rode to Florida for spring break. It shed parts for the first couple hundred miles then what ever was going to fall off had done so. About 2400 miles round trip and it never missed a beat. The riding through the snow storm coming back up through Illinois was the coldest I have ever been in my life.

This is the bike. photo from 75, not me on it.

Go for it, you only go around once. And soon you will be too tied down to escape.

There is nothing short of "Epic" to describe that story.

Anybody know of a roadside assistance program that will tow a bike with modified frame? (aka, hardtailed) I was already told "no" by Dairyland.

I wouldn't mind joining the AMA again. Anyone know if they will cover a "modded" bike?
thx.

good to know about dairyland. I have my cages insured by them. then again, insurance not needed in wash state. and if I had insurance, rates would just go up when I use it. Bight the bullet and pay for the tow out of your own pocket.
Ha...dairyland. almost as funny as blue hippo comp stuff.

I am currently rebuilding a 77D and looking forward to road trips, based on what aI have read so far it seems that the XS is unreliable for long road trips. I enjoy long trips and taking backroads that tend to be solitary, I was hoping that I would be able to enjoy the XS on these trips, once again, based on comments here it may seem a waste of time and money to rebuild this bike.

mine is 40 years old.....And i went through it completely, and built a new wire harness R/R etc. I dont think its unreliable. But, no way would i take a not gone through stocker from a previous owner on a long desolate trip. I Always carry basic tools, and remember to drive at 100km/h or less as right now i run stock gearing. Dont be in a rush, enjoy and be prepared to fix things...its still old tech.

I am going through the bike thoroughly, engine rebuilt and kept stock. I think modern bikes are cool, however they miss something older bikes have. Anyways I was hoping that instead of buying a new bike I would use the money for a thorough rebuild and in some way buy reliability with the character.
I guess I will find out.

As for distances, about 250 - 350 miles when doing a day of riding

Thanks for the information
