Hi all
Just pressed out the stem of my xs650 after much pissing about trying to take old weld off a rusty stem bottom , anyway got it out and when trying it gsxr bottom yoke or triple to USA folk it's not the same size hence the stem is baggy where as original is a press fit ? Around half a mm out ?
How the hell do I get around this ? Turning out to be a right hassle
Original xs stem is welded to yolk at the bottom and gsxr is press fit , don't really fancy trying to weld steel to aluminium as can't see it working , is building stem up with weld a possibility and grinding back to same size as gsxr stem ?

It seems that several people have used that front end on the XS650. If you scroll down a bit you will find a list of similar threads. Your search might start there.
Try putting GSXR swaps in the search box at the top of the page.

Thanks Leo , had a look though and nobody seems to mention the same issue , I can only think either build the surface up with weld or braze and mill back or a sleeve would need to be made

I had a bushing made and pressed then welded it to the xs stem then had the tree machined to a press fit for the new stem. Cognito moto now makes a kit for this

I read that someone heated up the stem and used a tapered drift to get the stem to the right size. was going to try this method this week on my xs360.

I have a GSXR 750 complete front end on my champion framed Yamaha, people say the steering head is the same as the stock XS 650. My other Staracer Yamaha has a Honda F4 complete front end on it. I haven't ridding the blue & white Yamaha yet but the Staracer with the Honda F4 front end made it so much easier to ride. Hope this helps some.

Since the blue Yamaha picture was taken the top portion of the steering stem was shaved down to allow the top triple clamp to slide down to meet the top of the steering stem head.

I looked on the Cognito Moto website but could not find the kit you were speaking about, Help?

Cheers everybody atleast I now know Im not going mad and it does require more work as I thought I might have an odd sized stem , I thought about heating the metal and widening with a tapered drift also as somebody mentioned or my other idea was to layer the stem bottom with some weld and lathe back to the right size .

Its so annoying as the fit is really really close

I've now carried out my original plan by building the lower end of stem up with weld and lathed back to new larger diameter , pressed it back in and worked a treat .
Don't get me wrong it's not as nice looking as the cognito one but it cost me nothing and to be honest I'd rather spend the $250 it would cost me to get that kit on something on show as the stem is invisible once installed , regards mark
