The way Yamaha welded them.
Looks like someone added an extra layer over the junction and welded it on, you might want to tread carefully and do a lot of checking if using that frame.

No need to e-mail...with editing your first post and including a full size picture, I see it now.
Bet if you snoop around You'll find "custom welds" somewhere on the front downtubes also. Maybe it's had a VINectomy.
