What do you all prefer to run through your engine? I am about to do my first change since buying my 75 XS 650. I know your supposed to run what the guy before ran, but I think oil has come a long way since then. What do you guys run, oil brand, weight. I am in the Mountains of NC.

My father runs Royal Purple 20-50. And his engine made a significant improvement in smoothness. I also saw that Mobil is putting out a V-twin Specific 20-50

I now use Motul 3000 20/50

Found some interesting reading in a bike mag some time ago about GTX Oils

Unless you guess strongly advice not to do so, it looks like I am going with mobil 20-50. What about a filter, I was planning on a change oil every 2,500 and filter every 5,000. Is there a better filter and where do I get it?

Ppl tend to change every 1000 mi. What kind of filter modification do you have?

Motul 300 10w40. is a great oil. just make sure you are using a motorcycle oil that is compatible with you clutch, or you will have a really bad week.

Roger on the mobil! Thats great news, I will go with it! Where can I find quality filters to run through it? I think I will do filter/oil every 2,500 miles.

You don't change the stock filter, just check it for debris. Under the plate that holds the front drain plug is another filter; check it for tears if you haven't. It's often torn. If the rear drain plug is stuck, no problem, the front plug drains 99% of the oil.

Air cooled MC engines are harder on oil than cars, 2500 miles between oil changes is kinda stretching it. Every 1000 miles is a better interval. I use 4t 20-50 MC oil + STP in the summer and 15-40 rotella or 10-40 motorcycle oil in the winter.

Long as we are all here anyone have a regular source for paper secondary oil filters? Seems like if I come up with a GOOD screen primary filter a paper secondary filter is an improvement. I am not that thrilled with the look of the finned honda filter adapter. Sorry!

There's the one mike has that sticks out the hole, but as much as I crash on dirt and gravel roads I doubt it's protected enough.
