I have a 79 special and I need some help with the 3 dash light indicaters.
The turn signal light is fine it blinks when I use the turn signal.
The brake light comes on when I start the bike then gos off and does nothing else. Im guesing its suppose to light up when I press either brake(correct me if im wrong) but it dosent, but the back brake light does come on when I apply the brakes.
Then the head lamp light does nothing, im guesing it is suppose to be on when the headlight is on(correct me if im wrong). But on my 79 the headlight dosent turn off, so does that mean the headlamp light should always be on if hooked up correct?

Any help is much appreciated

both are warning indicators
the brake indicator is for bulb failure ... comes on if your brakelight bulb burns outs, headlight indicator is the same if low beam goes out it will come on and switch to high beam operation

What Jayel sez; your lights are working as designed. Many ditch the headlight reserve device which is more likely to fail than the headlight, DUH!

I've always been able to tell when my headlight isn't working after dark :D

Hi jayel,
me too, but it ain't for that, it's to let you know that in daylight so you can buy a new bulb to put in while the bike shop is still open.

George Lucas AKA the Prince of Darkness is quoted as saying "A proper gentleman has no need to ride after dark anyway"

I've got a 77 and my stoplight indicator lights up when I apply the brakes.

The manual says that it is supposed to work that way, which I like. It also says that "if the stoplight does not work normally the stop lamp indicator will flash on and off as soon as the main switch is turned on, without operating either brake". I have never seen mine flash on and off which is fine since its working normally.

It sounds like you guys are saying that your stoplight indicators do not light up when you apply the brakes but only light up when the bulb is burned out. If the systems operate that differently based on the model year of the bike then I gotta say "77 Rules".

XStretchified

Again with the Prince of Darkness jokes again, eh?
Gotta tell you Lucas aerospace equipment worked perfectly because we were willing to pay good money for good gear.
OTOH, for the snivelling pittance that Brit bike & car mfrs were willing to pay them, Lucas should not be denigrated for their gear's poor performance, they should be praised that their gear worked at all.

99% of Lucas problems were poor grounds, Harleys had the same problems frames grounds only
