Would you put dual disc on a 72 XS2

Remember. This is for the 73 TX750 now.

I thought I'd have a little fun and post a pic of my pieced together factory dual disc brake option. I may or may not put it on the 750. But dammit. I have ALL the parts. :bike:

I will admit. A lot of it is for looks. I do understand that switching to a 16mm master will help. But I really like the look of the dual discs. And I'm the anal kind of guy that wants all the options. If it was available, I want. Err, cept the luggage rack and highway bars. I all ready took those off.

So if any of you guys are still willing to help with this forbidden venture,, lets talk about the master.

The master that I will be using says 11/16's on the bottom. Which is 17.4mm. Is that close enough to use for the increased pressure that you get with the 16mm.

Or, could I get by with just the stock 16mm with the dual disc if I go that route. The other master is God awefull ugly with it's massive reservoir sticking up. But is that needed for fluid volume.

I guess I could play around with the masters and see which one I like the best.

Any thoughts. Besides DON'T DO IT. :D

I have and rode madness, an old school special based hot rod, it has mag wheels AND dual disks so it's real big on unsprung weight. seemed to work just fine and had good stopping power. Progressive springs and shocks rotor drilling and the minton mods probably helped. My biggest issue was with the powerful front brakes a high compression 750 motor and an old (hard) rear tire the rear came around quite easily with the slightest touch on the rear disk brake lever.. That takes a little getting used to!
So if you like the looks go for it, it ain't gonna bite you (too hard) it's just a bit of a compromise and all old bikes are that!

:hijack:

Yeah an interesting "work in progress" Internal debate rages about back to the original rods hot rod or on to another mod. first up needs to be a welded crank then the rear fender is GONE!

As it was built by Rod Muchado.

So what the hell is unsprung weight. How does it effect my ride, or braking, or what ever.

Is it something a causal rider REALLY needs to worry about.

If you're just a casual rider (aren't we all?), forget about unsprung weight. If you don't understand unsprung weight, then its nothing to be concerned about.

It was obvious from your posts, that you want to have that dual front disc for its "look", so by all means install it, and enjoy it.:bike:

I think you were hoping to gather support from the crowd here, but its just not happening. That's OK, do what suits you, not what suits the crowd.

Unsprung weight is below the suspension, eg, wheels, rotors, calipers, guards, fork lowers and swing-arm.

I'm for what ever you want to do and the look of twin disks makes a bike look balanced.
As i said earlier all XS650's from 76 had Twin disk front brakes and no one complained unless wanting to get rid of weight for racing purposes.

I'm as much a fan of big stop as I am of big go. That is one reason for twin disks but as mentioned, a setup single stops great. Another is the two big rotors look serious. Twin disks have more style than a hard tail.

Cal, Skull has told you what unsprung weight is, but not why it signifies. Unsprung weight is the weight of the stuff that moves in response to surface irregularities. For the purposes of steering quickness and suspension compliance (i.e. keeping the rubber hooked up to the road), less is better.

The degree to which extra weight is significant to a given rider depends on the way he uses the machine. Shedding unsprung weight with a light Brembo rotor, aluminum bearing spacers, and titanium fasteners for the rotor and caliper makes a difference I can feel. Most riders wouldn't care one way or the other.

Drive 25 mph over a speed bump in a compact car. Now do the same thing in a four wheel drive truck. This is what unsprung weight means.

Brake rotors are also rotating mass. More means less when it comes to acceleration.

I too was looking to bolt up the 2nd disc..it does look cool, but the science convinced me otherwise. So I opted to shave the left side lower fork leg and eliminate any future possibilities of changing my mind.lol

Interesting and informative arguments pro and con but back to the original question, Would you put dual disc on a 72 XS2?
Yes I would. I'd put dual disc on any bike I had that they could be fitted on.

Well yes you are correct about the original question. But I think you skipped a couple of my replies. :D

I abandoned the idea and was just going to put it the stuff on my 73 TX750,,,,of which it was a factory option. :wink2:

Hi Cal,
FWIW, the December CVMG member's e-mag has that very bike on sale for $6,750 (which is only $5,940 in US money) Mind you, dunno what shape yours is in but the one in the ad photo looks to be showroom immaculate.

It's crazy aint it. There was one one ebay that was 100% restored with all nos parts, where needed, and it went for $7,000.

I guess 2 rich guys got in a bidding war because they had a bike like that when they were young. I posted a link to the auction when I first got mine.

Now I surely don't expect $7,000 out of mine. But I would take $6,000. Any buyers. :D

Hi Cal,
it's only crazy if you are looking to buy. If you can sell one at that price it's real nice.
BTW, same for sale column offers a really nice looking race-prepped '72 XS650 for a mere Cdn$3,000.
Perhaps you are sitting on a fortune, eh?
