Hi 1978 xs standard. How can you tell the different from a rod knock and a cam chain guild noise THANKS

Usually, the best indicator is if the sound changes based on engine load. While crusing at various speeds, roll-on then back-off the throttle. If the 'knock' comes/goes/changes, then it's likely to be a conrod problem. With raising and lowering rpm, both conrod and camchain can make different sounds, so try the varying load test without changing rpms too much.

This kinda diagnostic isn't definitive, as timing knock and piston slap can do this, too. If it's well tuned with proper fuel and ignition timing, then you could rule-out timing knock.

Whether it's piston slap or rod knock, the engine needs to come apart. Then you'll find the real cause...

Hey, Barry.
Lookit how big, thick the front guide is:

Now, lookit the tiny space it has to go thru.
With the crank sprocket in the way:

To do the job right, the cylinder has to be off. You need to center the guide in the cylinder. There is some play in the mounts so it can be mounted crooked. The only way to insure it's straight is to measure both the top and bottom where the guide hangs out of the cylinder. The cylinder needs to be off to do that .....
