which model seats fit the xs650?

Hi peanut,
at that kinda UK price even if you can find one, try DIYing a seat?
Make yourself a seat pan of the exact shape you want out of corrugated cardboard and masking tape.
Cover it both sides with 2 layers of fiberglass to make a super-rigid laminate.
Note that this is a poorboy copy of how they make airliner cabin floors and they have to survive the impact damage of a fat lady wearing stiletto heels.
Fabricate the appropriate attachments from 16ga sheet steel and bolt them on with big washers to spread the load.
Up to you if you want the foam and cover professionally done or to DIY that too.
Carefully save the stock seat so you can swap back to it if you want to.

Peanut, Ask the moderators to move this thread into the Garage

Have done . Apologies for posting in wrong section

Thanks for all your input on this Skull ....much appreciated as always

o.

NOoooooo .... I've got unfinished projects coming out my ears Fred ,besides I have no experience or equipment for working with leather .
Its got to be a finished seat that just requires a bit of welding or minor fabrication .

Peanut,
How about a pic of your bike with the seat on for a visual?
Air box side covers on too.......

I have a pic with the seat fixed but haven't gotten round to fixing up and painting the covers yet I'm afraid.

Ok I promised some pics of this seat so I thought I'd better get it done today.

Apologies for the poor quality but the bike was jammed in the garage under a load of junk and I couldn't wheel it out .

Looking closely at the seat its clear that the seat cover has never been modified or altered in any way whatsoever. Its entirely original .

Seeing you're overseas, all bets are off. However, that is not the original seat cover for a '79 Special, or any other US spec Special. That cover appears to be stitched. No stock cover was stitched that I'm aware of. Stock seat covers are welded, not stitched. The shape of that seat is totally wrong for a '79 Special. Your seat has been reshaped and recovered. I believe if you had a stock seat, you'd be happy.

Yours should look like this.

Your seat pan appears to be correct.

Right on Marty!
The stock '79 Special seat is a go to for an '80 and newer Special mild mod.
That style you have there is the extreme step-up seen on the Heritage Specials.
I'd look for a '79 cover and foam to do a swap. Shouldn't need the pan.

thanks everyone for all your advice. Looks like you've solved the puzzle.
Looks like some idiot has fitted a non Yamaha seat cover to a Yamaha roadster base before it was imported to the UK.

If I find out which bike the seat cover came off I'll post it on this thread.

I don't know if you don't listen or get confused.

1st pic; From page 1 post 14.
74-79 Standard, (Roadster), seat pan on the top of the pic
78/79/80Special and Special II seat pan on the bottom of the pic.

Check out the latches mounting configuration.

2nd pic; Your pic page 2 post 27.
The latch in your pic corresponds with the latch on the bottom seat pan, (Special 78/79/80 Specials and Special II's), in my pic

Your Seat pan is off a 78/79/80 Special or Special II

Your seat latch has the mounting bolts at 6 clock and 9 o'clock.
Standard, (roadster), pan has the latch mount bolts at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.

Your hinges are mounted slightly raised on the seat pan.
Standard, (Roadster), has the hinges recessed into the seat pan.

Your seat pan is of a 78/79/80 Special or Special II

Skull you are one rude arrogant sob

there was no call for you to be rude and insulting .I'd already ignored the previous rude comments and thanked everyone .

I'd just as soon not get any help from anyone as rude as you

Your right. I apologize for taking the time to help you. I won't bother posting in any of your threads in future and will remove my posts i have made in here.

How do I view the images of the many styles of seats? I am having a similar problem finding seat covers for my 1980 650SE.
Is there a way to post pictures on this site? I have a picture of the seat on my bike that I want to replace as well as a picture of the steep wedge type of seat that I do not want.

I sent both pictures to Mikes and asked them to let me know whether they were selling the wedge type or the gradual sloped ones. (I was unable to tell what their seat covers looked like because they were not mounted on a seat)
So I gave them the picture of the correct one and the incorrect one. I asked them which kind they stocked because I did not want the wrong one. They responded with a single sentence answer. "Yes, they will fit your bike". I bought them, paid the shipping and 5 days later the ones I did not want arrived. I complained. I sent them the pictures again and received a one sentence answer. "Send them back for a refund". So I am out 20 dollars for shipping and plus a 20 minute wait in the post office in order to send them back.
I would not have been so upset if I had not send them the pictures and specifically asked them if theirs was the ones that fit my bike. Now I am unsure where to buy seat covers and how to avoid this mistake again.
1. I do not know how to post pictures.
2. I do not know how to access the pictures of the seats described in the previous post.

wilbur60,

There is no 80SE, it is either a 78SE or 80SG and both seats are completely different.

78SE has a hinged seat like the pic in post #28.

80SG has a stand alone one year only model clip on seat. Has a gentle rise up to the passenger seat.

81 and later have a clip on seat but has a step up for the passenger

Go to the Sticky ID thread in the "Garage", shows the different models from 70-82
