Hello everyone,

I just research about xs650 and found this forum. I'm 25 years old, living in VietNam.
I feel lucky to have a 1980 xs650 heritage special coming to my home in about 2 week later, because this bike is very rare and pricey in my country and really hard to find one.
This forum provide me a lot of knowledge about this yamaha legendary.
I can't wait to build it to a street tracker soon.

I would like to say hello and thank you all for your help :)

Best Regards,
Nghiep Ly

That's a good looking bike:thumbsup: Yes, your engine sounds normal. These engines are not as quiet as modern bikes. As normal maintenance, you should check camchain adjustment and valve clearances.

Nice bike!
Retired gentleman beat me to the post! Yes, what he said.
Welcome to the site.

Thank you retiredgentleman, nj1639 for the help. I feel lucky to have her and will take care of her my best ;)
So glad to meet you guys

Hi Nghiep Ly and welcome,
a legendary correspondence quote from the 1930s:-
Letter from an angry customer:-
Dear Mr Bugatti, I have just bought a new Bugatti sports car and the engine sounds like a bucketful of ball bearings being poured onto an iron plate.
Reply from Ettoire Bugatti,
Dear Sir, from what you describe your engine is running perfectly.
Good luck with your new bike and with your proposed build.

Welcome, the members here are awesome, they have an unbelievable amount of knowledge and most are willing to share.

My build would have been a fail without them and I have just started my next build.

Best of luck Scott

Welcome to the forum Nghiep Ly !
You have a sweet bike. I bought a '76 in similar condition.
Lots of knowledge and camaraderie available at this site.

Love that Bugatti quote.

Hi Yamadude, nice to meet you!

Welcome nghieplk,

Tidy looking bike you have. Dont take to much notice what the side-covers say. Check out the Vin no's on the frame and engine. I think you have an 80SG, Telling points are the clip on seat, (one model only seat), and the rear disk brake. All later models, Mag wheel and spoke, had a drum rear brake. Speed o is off a 78SE/79F/SF

I think i know more about my bike now. Thank you for pointing me out all the things

Nice bike. I hope to see more as you transform it into the tracker.

Yeah i'm doing that, i'm going to create a new thread about my build soon :wink2:

Well done a very nice unique bike for your country.

Senore Bugatti also told Mr Bentley that he built a very fine truck !

Thank you Nialls :D

Welcome and I too wish you good luck on your build (I have 1983 Heritage Special):bike:

Thank you Richard. I see your bike, a beautiful lady :)

Hi Nialls,
as I remember it the quote was:-
Mr Bentley builds the fastest lorries on earth
Another Bugatti tall tale:-
Dear Mr Bugatti, my new car is difficult to start in cold weather.
Dear Sir, your Bugatti will start quite easily if you drain the coolant and oil when you park it and gently warm the fluids to blood heat on the stove before pouring them back in just before starting.
And if my sales staff had known you did not have a heated motor house they would not have let you buy the car in the first place.

Welcome Aboard! Nice Bike , RETORQUE THE HEAD!!

Yeah, what he said.
I didn't believe it was important until I did mine and those minor oil leaks all went away.
The tightening sequence and torque numbers can be found on this site.
Also there's rubber and steel composite washers under 4 of the head nuts.
The factory used laminated washers instead of annular ones and they leak over time.
Throw those washers out and replace them with copper washers as part of the re-torquing procedure.

Hi Nghieplk,

I just wanted to add "Welcome" from the Pacific Northwest. You really do have a very nice bike....my bikes are a bit tattered by comparison, but I love them anyway.

Do you have much difficulty getting parts? Just curious---we seem to have a good supply of them available, so hopefully that is true there also.

Anyway, welcome. Enjoy the Site. The guys here are great.....:bike:
