Hello there!
I'm new to the site so first off my name is Jeremy an I've been reading up on this site for months now and figured it was time to register and say hi.
I live in Ontario Canada, and have been building a hardtail Yamaha xs 650 for the last few months and I've got to the point of needing to do some wiring and proper ID of the motorcycle.
I know the electrical/wiring systems changed a bit through out the years and I need to be able to id what model I have so that I know what schematic to follow then break down the system an remove everything I don't need.

The vin on the neck is 447-901*** , I know there is already threads on this topic but I could seem to find the answer I was looking for (or maybe I can't figure out the charts :/)

And where do I find the vin on engine (engines been out of the frame since I bought it an need to know if it matches or not

I'm going to take a guess and say you have a 1978 Special. I can confidently say that because I have the same VIN on my 78 Special.:D

The engine VIN is on the front of the engine crankcase.

Welcome to the site......................by the way, I'm an Ontario boy as well.

Sweet deal I see Edmonton on yor location as well I got friends n family out there to.
An ya I just found the ownership :)/ was kinda freakin out there for a bit) and it dose say 78 and originally was gray colour...
And ok sweet deal just checked #'s an they match.
So what model dose that make it? A "D" ?
And another thing that has me thinking now is that I have a cdi box? (I think) on the wiring harness but weren't up to 80 all points?

'78s are "E" models. The Standard would be an "E", the Special an "SE". Yes, stock would be points on a '78. Maybe the harness is from a later model? Have you looked to see if points are installed? Your motor could be upgraded but it would require the later alternator and rotor besides the electronic ignition box.

What my plan is, to take full wire harness, chop it down remove everything I don't need, but use all stock parts (alternator, regulator, rectifier, coils etc.) stuff all this inside electronics box, and wire lights switches etc.

No I haven't touched the engine (yet) the PO said that it was rebuilt b4 it was put away then I bought it and it's still sat untouched since said rebuild, I have two bikes (one with papers and other for parts no papers) other is supposed to be a 77 but harness looks to b almost identical with what again looks to have a cdi box on it

I think I know what harness is for the supposed rebuilt engine but I cant be sure

Hi guys, I'm in Vancouver Island with an xs650 cafe racer and I've been in touch with a bloke down in Victoria bc. Are there any Canada bike get-togethers like the one down in Arizona publicised on this site?

As far as your electrical components questions go, my suggestion would be unless you are a electrical guru (and you wouldn't be asking such questions...) in the first instance change as little as possible. You might be able to do without indicators but do you want to do without the electric start? How about the headlight controls?

Jonathan

Everything is staying as it would be e-start, signals etc. just all wired to harley controls with neutral, signal, and hibeam indicators in the new mini speedo, tach removed and capped, but still able to put one on if needed (tuning or to put one back on at later time)
The reasoning is that both harnesses are an utter mess to put it lightly as PO's did a number of cut/splice all over the place on both harnesses.
I've rewired complete cars/trucks over the yrs but I always knew what needed to b there an what didn't as well as where it was supposed to go etc. but can't seem to figure this xs out

I've looked at numerous simplified harnesses on here an the net but they all seem to have updated/aftermarket ignition, an new combined regulator/rectifier, an most don't have signals, I can figure out some of this on my own such as lighting, horn, starter etc. the simple stuff, it's what can I remove from this original harness an what do I have to keep in order to run stock parts insted of aftermarket

You can remove the Reserve Lighting Device, and the Light Checker. The Safety Relay is a useful device, but some people remove it as well.

The stock type ignition coils are known for a weak spark, even when they were new. If you want a good strong spark, better to go with a single dual output coil that puts out 30 K volts or more.

Points ignition can work for you, but at least buy new points and new condenser. Also need to replace old spark plug leads and caps. Many, including myself, prefer to not use points and choose something like the Pamco.

The stock regulator and rectifier, while OK for the first 20 or 30 yaers, are of old design and can cause problems. Very inexpensive to buy a modern 3 phase rectifier and a NOS automotive regulator such as the VR-115.

You don't want to "stuff" the coil(s) or the rectifier inside an electronics box. Those components need to be kept cool. Rectifier needs a heat sink. Air flow around both items is a desirable thing to have.

There are many, many threads on these topics. Use the Google Custom Search in upper left corner.

I tried the search kept only really getting 1/2 an answer, an no the coils will b mounted in stock location for air and rectifier is mounted on the outside of box for air (one of the things I did learn lol) and I always wanted to leave the coils in there original location....

So as far as pieces I don't need are reserve lighting device and light checker (medium size square box-gray, with 2 mounting bolts, and 6wire lead plug. And small rectangular box-black, rubber "slip-on" mount, 6 wire lead plug)

Correct?

And keep safety relay for well safety reasons but not needed (metal box on metal rubber mounted plate, with 3wire lead to plug + 2 with bullet connectors)

Correct?

Sorry I know it's a lot of questions, a lot of newbie ones. Again sorry

I'm looking at the wiring schematic in the clymer repair manual and it's showing 2 things that I don't know what they are. They are a "flasher cancelling unit (don't know if I even have this) and a reed switch (wtf is this) both "pieces" are wired together and to all lights?

Is this reed switch the signals switch?
Do I need this flasher cancelling unit? Google shows it as the light checker?

Yes you are correct, except the Light Checker has 7 leads in a 9 pin plug.

You don't need or want either of those 2 items. Just unplug the cancelling unit.

When you see a component, that you don't know what it is, note the colour code of the wires, and compare that to the wiring diagram. The wiring diagram will tell you what you have.

Ok so let's back up ... Might make it easier for everyone (including myself).
What I need for what I'm doing - regulator, rectifier, safety relay, starter solenoid, starter, coils, contact braker with capastiors, flasher relay, plus all my lights an switches?
And if I wire I need runs into part I took out but don't follow same colour out?

Damn I really opened a can of worms an makin myself look like a dumby :/

Some of the wires in the harness arnt the same colour (ie book says white, harness is yellow)

Welcome. The flasher cancelling unit and reed switch are not needed and probably don't work. The reed switch is located in the speedometer. When working it is suppose to turn off the signal after you make the turn.
