Hey Guys. I've just switched gears again. I just picked up a 84 1200 Goldwing. Needs some tlc to bring it back.

I had to clean carbs and replace fuel tank. And all the usual stuff for a bike that has been sitting.

Just wondering if there were "Others" here,,,,lol.

It's a full dresser. But in this pic I have it stripped down to remove the fuel tank.

I'd be more interested in the Yamaha in the background. Got any pics of it to stick up front?

Ya. Most here hate that one too,,,,lol. That's my 73 TX750. If you're still interested, search my threads about it,,,,,lol.

My other bike is a '76 GL1000 that I also rescued from a barn. I completely rebuilt the carbs, had both the fuel tank and radiator professionally serviced, new fuel pump, complete overhaul of the brakes, misc. electrical gremlins, etc. to get it into its current condition. I stripped all the extras and ride it as a naked bike. I love that bike as much as my XS. The Honda is a nice smooth road cruiser where the XS is nimble and as much to ride as well. I often find myself standing in between them having a hard time making a decision which one to ride out of the driveway.

Great looking bike. I love the naked wings. That's actually how I got started on this one. I seen a naked 79 that I thought was really tough. Googled some images and had to have one,,,,lol.

Then I decided since I just beat cancer I was finally going to go on that long trip I've always talked about. So I figured I needed a full dresser. So now I guess I'm going to try my luck on this thing,,,,lol.

Still needs a lot of tlc to get trip worthy. I might just ride off into the Sun like Thelma and Luease,,,,,lol. :D

Congrats on beating cancer! Time to work on that bucket list!

Take a look at ngwclub.com and join the forum over there. Just like the XS group here, there's a ton of good guys with tons of knowledge and tutorials to get you everything you need. I have the same ID over there so feel free to look me up.

Without both the XS and NGW forums, both of my bikes would be heaps of useless metal. I have a great amount of respect for everyone here as well as the NGW guys.

Just picked up a 1975 GL1000. Stored in an extra room in Texas for about 30 years. Only has 3800 miles on it. Guy I bought it from had it torn down to do new timing belts and carb rebuilds. I went even further and resealed all the coolant lines too. Just got it running this last Saturday. Needs to have the brakes gone through and some new tires. I did putt it up and down my street this morning, pretty spooky with out any brakes. I'll get some pictures up when I get my camera back from the wife (she's in England right now). Can't wait to get this out on the road.

On another note, I do love my XS just as much. Just had it in a vintage show this past weekend. Got first place in "vintage freak show" class. There is a whole build thread here (my new build, the 23") and it was in the 2014 calendar (November I think).

Happy riding.:bike:

We used to get a lot of complaints about rough idling on the 75-77 GL1000's. Using a pin-vice and #80 (0.0135") bit, I'd open-up the fixed pilots. (For only $25). Effectively going from #30 to #35 jetting. Idles would smooth right out, air screws became responsive. I wonder if that ever caught on...?

Ya. It says right in the Honda manual to drill out the pilot plugs. Then set the screw to 3 1/2 turns out. But that's on a 84-87

Ya. I joined up over there at the naked site awhile back when I was trying to decide between a 79 and another. I asked which was more desirable. Might ring a bell. They were a lot of help. But I ended up with neither that I was asking about.

Then I got the 84. I then found the goldwingfacts.com site ran by Steve Saunders. I really am draining them guys,,,,lol.

1984 was the year Honda had wheel bearing problems in the Comstars. The outer races weren't tight enough and the entire bearing would spin, ruining the seat it sits in. Honda recalled and used either a slightly larger bearing while machining the seat properly for it, or as some claimed, they reamed the seat out and pressed in a proper sized sleeve. Of course after all these years it's not been a problem on yours, or it was fixed under warranty. I recall that some Florida dealers lost their franchises for double dipping. They collected warranty work monies from Honda and also from owners unaware that Honda took care of all of them at no owner expense, regardless of warranty. It was quite expensive, too. I had a relative with the problem.

Thanks for the heads up on the bearings. I don't have the Comstars so I hope I'm ok.

On the 84's they also had an ignition switch recall. They would quit making good contact and loose all power.

They came up with a new design. But it would fail too over time. They did so many recalls that there is now not a switch to be found, not even by the dealers needing to do the recall.

Unfortunately mine has the faulty switch, but the vin# does not fall into the range. My Brother works at a Harley/Honda dealer a ran my vin. No recall for anything on my bike. So I bought 2 different switch's off ebay and they both were bad. So I just glued mine up,,,,lol.

Hey guys. Haven't been around for awhile. Thought I'd check in.

This dam Goldwing has stolen my life,,,lol. Actually, I love this bike. It's my "Main Horse" as my buddy puts it. Meaning I ride this thing everywhere, for everything. Even to the grocery store. And I've been doing some camping on it. too. Haven't made the cross country trip yet. But I'm having a ball on it. It's great.

But tonight I just happened to walk in the motorcycle room and visit with my XS2. I feel guilty for ignoring it. I guess I need to show it some love. :D

Here's the Goldwing awhile back. I have a lot of the loose ends buttoned up now. Looks better than in this vid.

My '77 RatWing. I didn't plan on making it a project. Thought I could just get it running and maybe make a few bucks. Ended up putting way too many man hours in it, so I decided to keep it for myself and go in a completely different direction. One of those "in for a penny, in for a pound" kind of things. It completely derailed my XS cafe build, though. I hope to get back on that over the winter.

WOW!! That thing looks great. Good job.

I agree. That's pretty nice. It's easy to forget that Honda originally designed the GL to be a sport touring bike. I remember when they first came out, owners were crying for pieces to load 'em up. Considering that, at the time, the Electra-Glide and Heavy Guzzi were the only heavy weight touring bikes, it's not surprising. The HD of 1976 was sorely in need of quality control and there weren't too many Guzzis available.

I've owned several touring bikes over the years since 1972 when I started riding and I've told people- if you want to go somewhere, you get a Goldwing. Hands down the best long distance ride there is. Had a 1200 and I considered it the best all around touring bike I've owned ( and that includes Harleys, and 1500 Goldwing, and trike)
