Hey all,
I recently purchased a 1979 xs650 special 2 and am wondering if I need to get the Basic High Output Standard Ignition/PMA Package (Part #24-2670 on mikesxs) or the Complete High Output Standard Ignition/PMA Package (Part #24-2671 on mikesxs)?

For the basic kit it says, "Note: For 1980-84 North American models see other kit versions which include the advance parts needed that are normally absent on the 1980-84 models."

I know most 80-84 models were specials, so I'm wondering if the 1979 special 2's have those "advance" parts or am I good with just the basic it?

I'm also thinking about replacing the carbs with mikuni racing carbs that I've heard good things about...my bike is an original barn find so any advice on parts or stock problems for getting the bike reliable would be appreciated!

Welcome!

Congrats on your purchase...although I think you have the Special, not Special II. (Special II's had spoke wheels) Either way, I'm pretty sure the "Basic" will work for you as you would have a points ignition, and advance rod, etc.

Does your bike run? Are you replacing your charging/ignition system because it's not working, or just to upgrade it? (Just curious).

Good luck.

Yes, there's no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a new charging system if your original still works OK. Even if it doesn't, many times the fix it needs is way cheaper than a PMA.

I bought the E advance kit direct from Pete and used a Dyna dual tower compact series coil. 3 times the potential energy of the stock coil is plenty. No real need for a flamethrower if you will never put that kind of demand on it. Look at the EX500 carbs thread before you go spend a few hundred on VM34's
