Just got 60miles on the clock after the rebuild. so far so good.
So what we got ere then. Its an '81se. First over bore with new pistons and rings. New oil feed pipe from mikes. Seems ok but i wouldnt want to over zealous with the spanners at the bottom there. Used threebond on the cases. Brilliant stuff. Cant tecommend highly enough. New cam chain. Guides were in excellent condition anyway so...valves lapped and holding paraffin/kerosene overnight. PMA aga8n cant recommend highly enough. Timimg marks aside it was the easiest and most noticeable 200 quid i spent. Boyer ignition. 4.5ah Gel battery. Every single wire is brand new. Brass bullet connectors everywher possible. Wires soldered and joint coated with diaelectruc grease to prevent corrosion. Braided HT leads and iridium plugs. Rechromed fork legs and wide billet slab yokes. Harley mustang-type tank. I did the indian larry sides myself. What an epic job that was. I spent 2 weeks chasing pinholes. Then petrol proof laquer, 2 coats, then painted and another 3 coats of laquer then copper leaf the inverts and anoyher 2 coats of laquer. Im hoping it wont rust or leak any time soon. Mounted the tank on 2No 6mm bars welded to the slim profile top engine mout. Covered the 6mm with fuel line. Then got some wrap round rubber tank mounts. All held in place by a leather tank strap. This one is temp. As i couldnt wait to get out on the bike. My awesome friend is going to stitch me up a nice bit o hide. Another talentef mate is making me a saddle. Still cant decide wether to copy this one or go solo. Previous owner did the rake and lowered the seat. I plan to redo the back end nxt winter. Yhen i get the frame powder coated. Im looking to get a rear wheel to match the front spoke pattern. Oh. Rear shocks are from a Honda CB900 Custom. Hand made twisted handlebars by me. Copper battery box, alt cover in 3mm copper, front fender brace all made by myself. If you read all this you're a fanatic too. Safe riding, remember to nod whatever they're riding, they might just be the true biker who is out in all the weathers. Including some that they just shouldnt be. Smiffy

Here are my XS650s of years past. I am starting another, but I guess it is time for me to get to posting and contributing. I did the bobber first, but it while it was a beauty to look at I really couldn't ever get comfy on the roughness of the ride so I will just do cafe style from now on. I am starting a 78 cafe now. Game on!

Heres my relatively stock '79 Special. Back on the road after a really long garage nap.

Need suggest on seat.
The current seat is not fit the chop aluminum tank. So i think i'll make another seat that fit and a bit lower than the current. Does it look ok?

Here is my bike after a short ride today. 1980 Special.

Wow, there are some really nice bikes on here.

Coast side: This looks fantastic. A host of subtle changes that come together with a huge impact in my opinion. Looks like a model should have rolled out the door looking like this.

Question on your seat. Looks like a standard pan and seat with the foam shaved down. I have a '79 special, and also picked up a standard pan a while back which I plan on cleaning up to do something similar. Anyway, my question is on the cover. Did you buy a cover and install yourself, or did you have that done by an upholsterer? Looks great.

I had a professional do the upholstery work. It is not my forte. I would rather tinker with the bike.
