My '79 is for sale.

She needs a top end rebuild. There is no compression on the right side.
This bike is clean and gorgeous. I'd love to see her go to the right home.

$1,200

You could buy a good runner for half that if you were lucky, and by the time you got it into the nice condition of this bike you'd have a lot more money in it than you'd want to admit.

It just cost me around $550 to do the top end of the tracker a few weeks ago. that was a gasket kit, 2 pistons and rings, carb kits, valve seals and a bore job.

Is $550 for the top end with your labor? Looks super clean. So if he'd take a grand for the bike, (sellers should build in some wiggle room), then $550 for the top end, I'd think $1550 for a titled XS in this condition with a new top end would be a pretty good deal, right?

Labor is free........

It's the pig in a poke cunumdrum. Is everything else in the engine good. Tea leaves but if it holed the piston(likely) was from detonation from running too lean. or it could be a bent or burned valve, why? How's the small end of the con rod of a cylinder that's been pinging?? We don't know, it isn't running. and, and, and. Just say'n Bike looks nice, everything else could be fine.

Labor is free, if you can do the work. I've never priced parts for a top end rebuild, so I was wondering if $550 sounded about right, (including shop labor). Anyway, I guess until you open it up, you never know.

Ummm...
$1200 for a bike with a known bad engine?
Is it just me?

Hi Downeaster,
you and everyone else who remembers how cheap they could be bought, back in the day.
I remember my buddy Herb looking out of the office window and lusting after the young ladies walking below, and telling him:-
"Forget it Herb, we have lived through the golden age and now it's over."
"And when was this golden age?"
"After the pill and before AIDS."
Same deal with low cost XS650s.

I guess. Some glad I ain't in the market these days.

Bikes OR Wimmens!

That has to be a price with your own labor. Top end rebuild 6 hours labor if there is NO BORE involved and I got $510.00 labor @ $85.00 hour. If you had to have bore add another $100.00 plus parts in a shop you are close to $850.00
This would be my breakdown for someone who came into my shop
BORE $100.00
Pistons 706 kit $120.00
Gaskets $45.00
Cam Guide $60.00
Misc Extra charge $30.00
Labor 6 hours $85.00 hr
Plus I got to back the work for 6 months
So a bike that needs a top end SUPER CLEAN as it looks $800.00
and if I bought it I would tear the complete motor down
DO IT RIGHT ONE TIME

Hey, I'm glad to see all of the responses to my post.
$1,200 is not a firm price.
When someone gets this bike back up and running I figured they could do that for under a grand which would still amount to less than I paid for her just last year.

alright, then.
Buy maggies bike at $1200, rebuild the top end for $1k, and based on prices of a good clean, running xs, you could easily flip it for 4k.
The rebuild would double the price.
Y'all are just trying to get a good looking solid, but needs topend bike for cheap. Cheap sob's.

Me If I was buying that bike the moneys in the parts. Cut that sucker up and sell off those mint parts and be done and go to the bank. You cannot save everyone SORRY. If you did stick the money into it and get it running correct then you are sitting on it until it sells . This is a GREAT bike for someone to add to there collection for LOOKS and repair later. Need some more pictures up to tell how good it is.

A bike like that would go for $3000-$4000 thousand in the UK, if not more.. think your self lucky you don't live here like us poor sods having to pay the earth for XS650's and parts ;)
