Oil Gland Nut Thread Repair

The parts motor I bought had a glob of epoxy on the front as pointed out by the seller, plus it was seized. Got it home and got the pistons freed up, cleaned off the epoxy on the front of the cases and saw that the thread in the case was badly chewed up.

Did my research here about repairing it and went to get a helicoil or time sert. Anyone I asked looked blank when I asked for a time sert M14x1.5. The helicoil kit could be ordered, but the kit was over $100.00 (but it had all the needed tools and 5 wire threads). What to do?

This is supposed to be a budget build ('76 resto mod), so I went looking for substitutes. I read here where a fellow had used a 3/8 pipe thread into the case, so I found a brass plumbing piece with that exterior thread. I wanted it hollow, because there is no way my limited hand held tools and skill will allow me to drill down the exact centre of a solid and thread it. I can, though, open up a hole already machined in and thread it to match the oil gland nut M14x1.5, which is apparently the same thread as a Honda Odyssey Oil pan drain plug.

After I got the inside thread done, I screwed the fitting into the case, cut it flush with the surface, smoothed it off and done! The two taps I bought totalled about $45.00, the fitting was a couple bucks.

Challenges were not too horrible, but using the 3/8 pipe tap into the case, I had to grind about half inch off the bottom of it to essentially make a bottom tap as the taper on it initially would not allow me to cut enough threads into the case to make a stable thread for my repair without making the tap shorter.

The brass fitting was hard to hold without messing up the outside threads, so I dropped it into a socket and put the ratchet into the vice. Every time I wanted to reverse the tap to clear it, I had to click the ratchet.

The brass shield is screwed into the case about a half inch and there are about 4 or 5 interior threads now to catch the gland nut. I will for sure be using two wrenches on assembly

Good save there, lakeview.
And a budget fix. The locking feature of pipe threads should keep it in place.
I would definitely choose this method over helicoil.

An alternative would have been to thread it into a larger 3/8" NPT female threaded adapter that's clamped in the vice.

Or, a 3-jaw chuck for the lathe guys...
