I am hoping someone can help with an answer here. I am building Daryl Dixon's motorcycle from the Walking Dead, and I am trying to figure out the XS650 tank part. The CB750 was fitted with a XS650 "reproduction" tank. Now a few people have built this bike and have used a XS650 original rank, but the actual bike built by Classified Moto has the fuel port in the center of the the tank. So, I am wondering where this tank came from. Any help would be appreciated.

Some 650's have the gas cap in the center, some off to the side. Look on eBay, there are all kinds there.

Ok - so, I found that mikesxs.net is a great source for XS650 parts, and they have the reproduction tank with the center gas cap. So, here is where I am now, and I hope someone can help. The XS650 tank has to be "modified" to fit the CB750, and when I look at the tank, it has two cylindrical inserts on the inside of it. However, the CB750 has two male pieces sticking off the frame. My thought (after looking at service manuals) is that the CB750 tank has "C" shaped inserts so that the tank can slide forward onto them and then bolt at the rear. However, the XS650 tank I think gets a couple of rubber pieces that hold it on. Am I wrong to think that it is weird that the XS650 bolts in the back and then a couple of rubber pieces wedge the front of the tank on? Also, when people "modify" the XS650 tank, does anyone know what the modification is? At first thought, I was thinking that they cut out a piece of the round insert to make it like a "C" so it could slide on the CB750, but when I measure where they are, I do not think they will line up...thoughts?

This thread has the reverse scenario, Honda tank on an XS650.

http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31762

In that thread, I mentioned a build thread with more info. That would've been somewhere in 2013.
So, an advanced search on 'tank' and 'mount', limited to 2013, should get it.
That'll be a lotta threads to sift thru.

It would be best to do the mount mods to the frame, avoiding tank welding.

I feel your pain...

Hi ChuckT and welcome,
Yeah, XS650 tanks have nubbins with rubber caps on them inside the tank tunnel and the XS650 frames have C-cups that accept them while Honda does the same but backwards.
I'm with 2Many. Leave the tank alone and modify the frame. It's WAY easier to get at and there's no risk of bad welding leaving a gas leak or of poor welding procedures turning the gas tank into a fuel bomb.
You will need to remove the Honda frame's tank mounts and weld a pair of XS650 C-cups in their place, being careful to weld them in the right place to fit the XS650 tank because Murphy's law sez it won't be the SAME place.
And a possible bonus. There are list members who fit small aftermarket gas tanks to their bikes and who remove the unwanted frame cups.
Perhaps a post in the list's classifieds would have someone send you a set of XS650 frame tank mounting C-cups to save you the hassle of making them?

I THINK I still have the cups that I took off my frame....if I can find them, you can have them. (Just pay me for my time to go up to my storage locker to find them and shipping). PM me if interested.

I had Mikesxs send me the rubber cas for the tank, and now I see what you guys are talking about. I cut off the mounts that were on the frame at the gusset, and it matches up pretty good. I can push it down and mount it with a bolt at the rear of the tank, but I should probably take Brassneck up on the offer. Twomanyxs1bs post with the photos is a big help.

Replied to your PM ChuckT. I'll take a look and let you know when I'm back in town on Wed.

Not yet as I took family on a trip to Hawaii and I need to get a welder when I get back. They will sit so that the center is a little on the top bar, so to get it right I may need to drill/run a bolt through it first so that I have them sitting right and then do a quick weld.

Post some pics when you get er together. I'm in the same exact boat right now. There sure is going to be clearance issues on top of the head when the tank gets snugged to the frame.

I am leaving about a half inch and with the rubber pieces on the repro tank I got it fits pretty solid already so it should work. I will post pics in a week or so

OK - I bought an ESAB Rebel welder, which can do MIG, TIG, and Stick. I only know how to do MIG, but why not get a bad ass welder while I am at it...

These went on pretty easy actually, and I did not need to run a screw. I put the rubber covers on the tank on the inside and then held the metal mounts on while I mounted the tank. Once I got it in the right spot, I reached in from the front and scratched a couple marks with a long screwdriver to make sure the mounts go on right. Then I took a bog C-Clamp and held one on while I did a couple tack welds. Then I welded the crap out of each mount. As you can see in the pics, it isn't pretty but will look better after I paint the area (hidden anyway). These things will not come off... I have the lip of the tank about a half inch above the motor.

Thanks again, Brassneck, for the mounts. If someone else comes across this, you could probably get some thin metal and make some with a MIG.

Hi Chuck,

I bought same bike after I saw CM custom like you and it feels like a daunting task with engine so dirty and so. After I saw your bike's photos, I wanted to put more effort in it. I never worked on a bike, dont know engine either. I think you had frame and engine sand blasted and power coated. Looks great, I wonder if you finished already. =)

I would like to know more about your process. You inspired me!

Thanks

N

Thanks to hear. I did not sandblast or powder coat. I just welded on it, and then used black spray paint. I finished the project about 2 years ago, and you can see it on youtube here:
and here:
There are also some sidebar videos on minor components.
