Invitation to Organize: Central New York XS650 Owners

Looks like you have some sweet driving roads in Somerset, Peanut. I'm envious.

yes back in 1997. It was due to one of the school shootings we had back then Dunblane I think.
We were given some compensation but not much and we had to hand all our handguns in You needed a special catagorie section 5 Firearms License or dealers license after that to own any handgun.
Scuse the off topic post :D you can see the deactivation damage done to this fine antique by a philistine deactivator with a angle grinder ?:yikes::wtf:
The E in the serial is what denotes it as a English MI5/6 issue

Very cool pieces of industrial history !

"Deactivator" sounds to me like a character in a dark future sci-fi flic like "The Terminator", but it obviously was a bitter reality for you, I'm sure. I can't imagine someone going at one of my Rugers with an angle grinder.

Heads up !

'77 XS that went up on Craigs Watertown an hour ago. Owner wants $1850:

hey yamadude, winter may finally be over !!!! unfortunately my "67" build hit a stumbling block:banghead: Couldnt get the damn thing to run, finally figured out the all four valves were leaking! WTF so basically i went from the build being 95% done to having to rip the engine out and take the head back to the machinist who did the valve job, uuuuugh. In the meantime i've been riding my triumph america that i just finished some mods on. I put on exile bars and twist throttle and twist clutch and front and rear brakes operate on the right foot pedal. Sweet clean bars but the brake and twist clutch have been real interesting to get used to!!! I actually like the twist clutch but not having a front brake lever on bars is somewhat unnerving!! I'll put up some pics when i get a chance. Hopefully get the rocker box back next week and put engine back together, back in bike, and give her another go to fire the "67". Hows the xs build going? If your are in need of any stocker parts let me know, i have a big tub filled with em. Peace, Fishman

Hey Fishman! Great to hear that you found the problem. I followed the thread you started on start-up issues, and even contributed at one point.

I couldnt be more thrilled with the warm weather; yes, I think that this brutal winter is over, but if it rears its ugly head again I'll get the gun out.

Got the FJR and the V-Star 1100 out these past days: intoxicating to finally wind the throttle.

Your Triumph America mods are quite interesting; yes, please do add some pics.

My '76 stock build is coming along; engine out of the frame, and wirebrushed it (it was very oxidized) using a set of 15 brushes, some fabricated myself. Polishing the covers this weekend. Almost ready to spray the frame with VHT Epoxy gloss black.

you did a awesome job on that engine, super clean!!!

people dont realize how many hours it takes to make a engine look like that:thumbsup:
just got head back from machinist and he doesnt think the valves leaking were the starting problem, even though he admitted they were leaking:banghead: so im bumming but all we can do at this point is put the engine back together and see if we can start it, looking at everything to see if there was another problem that im overlooking, i put in a new cam (mikesxs performance cam) so im wondering if there is something funky with that(nobody really has anything good to say about the mikes cam!) im thinking of maybe putting in the old cam because it didnt look too bad, but breaking the cam chain is getting to be a pain in the arrrrse, i've already had to pay mikes excessive shipping to get a new cam chain link. ANYWAY, going to get it back together, put in back in and hope for the best!!! Will let u know how it works out! good luck with the build! fishman

In a pinch, you can get replacement cam chain master links right from your local Yamaha dealer. They have both the D.I.D. and Tsubaki ones, around $5 each.

Hey there everyone,
It took me long enough, but I just wanted to post and say hello!
I'm a newish rider in the Utica area, and my first bike is a 1981 650 Special II. I love this bike, and I lucked out by getting a barn find with only 7500 miles and all original parts! I've spent the last couple years riding, and getting my hands dirty cleaning, fixing, and updating!
I've spent the last year working as a special education teacher, and now that school is over, I'm going to be riding as much as I can!
Well, I just wanted to say hi to all the 650 owners here in the CNY, hope to see some of you around!

Hey, Welcome to the CNY group!
Seems you have found a great XS650, and are treating it with great respect. How about posting some pictures?

Hey CNY XS650 owners, I thought I'd refresh the post I started last year, and ask where everyone is at with their builds.

Also to suggest that we meet up somewhere in the Spring to check out each other's bikes and take a ride. We could gather here at my place near Otisco Lake and ride to Moravia, or meet at Ironwood's vintage bike weekly gathering in Manlius.

Here's my update:
My '76 total resto is essential done, and running great. Just needs a fresh paint job on the tank and covers when the weather cooperates.

Picked up a really nice '83 Heritage Special on Craigs last summer, which I put on the road. Spent much of the winter detailing, updating, and servicing it.

Last month picked up a '77 with a Hooker exhaust and original paint. Its in my winter workshop now, getting overhauled.

How about you guys?

Frame is finished, powdercoated, and re-assembly started.Tank and fender are out to paint, seat is out to be covered in leather. I can't finish the wiring, as electrical components mount to the rear fender and seat, the rear fender is part of the rear brake stay, so brake linkage cannot be finished, and without the tank it won't be going far anyway...

some of the later pics...

...and that's where I'm at. Dead in the water.
