So my build thread has a longer post on this, in short I bought a new harness, for an 81' to match the motor. I found out the bike is apparently wired for an 82' harness. The plug for the ignition unit is where my problem is.

Here is the plug from my new harness, which works everywhere but here....

Here is the plug from my old harness, that i couldnt use because the harness was butchered prior to me trying to remove the fuse box.

help! :banghead:

Kinda stupid starting another thread with the same information that is asked in you build thread.

No need to use a derogatory word to get my point across. I apologize for that. Your right wer

Skull that comes off as a personal attack. You better go over the forum rules you so like to quote.
Or as my mother used to say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything

Not saying you're wrong, but this is nothing new to him.....it's not like starting a new thread would generate new eyes/opinions on a singular problem or anything....apologies to you OP. Helpful people do exist here.

Don't need you to apologize for me. I can do it my self if the PO is offended.

I recon i do a lot of help, so stop making out i don't, kinda repeat your self and if your trolling i have made your day

Hook, line and sink. You "CAN" be helpful, with an equal portion of unnecessary rudeness. I might repeat because posters like you don't get it. Not your website, not you're place to shit on new members. This place does better with more members not less, kinda stupid you don't get that huh?

I'll play your silly game...............Back up your statement

It looks like the post '81 bikes got the side stand safety switch. The second black/white wire wire looks like it went to the relay for that switch. The other B/w wire goes to the pickup coil which you need. By the way the standard punishment for starting a new thread is be-heading! Lol

I agree with Grinder. Taxcut should find the 4 pin connector (on the old wiring harness), that used to connect to the Sidestand Relay. One of the 4 wires will be black/white or maybe white/black. Use your ohmmeter to check for continuity for that same wire back at the 7 pin connector. That will identify the wire that you want to remove/cap on the 7 pin TCI connector.

His old harness didn't have the side stand switch.
It is a 6-wire tci and harness.
His new harness(for the later '82 & '83) does.
He can check for continuity on the new harness but I can guarantee it will be the last W/b wire that is across from the empty slot.
He needs an 8-slot housing for his tci wired exactly like the 6-slot/pin.
Nothing will be in the slot for the 7th pin, nor will there be anything to plug into at the coupling for the side stand rely. NO cutting of wires required.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is kinda funny that nobody is responding to this question in his build thread.

So maybe he did need two threads.

Well skull, you are right I didn't need two threads. I was hoping by tagging this thread "electrical" it might draw attention to it. Next time I will stick to my build thread. For the record, no offense taken. I would have probably made the same comment if I was knowledgable as to how the forum worked, but as a new guy I was just trying to get some attention to my question quickly.

Noted for future reference. So I guess all things considered I need to go get an 8 slot housing and rewire my 6wire to it, as it is currently wired. Off to the store.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

WER, I think you have things reversed. He said his bike was originally wired as an 82/83 year. So that means it was wired for a sidestand switch and for 7 wire TCI ignition. His picture of the old plug shows it is an 8 pin connector.

He could just re-use the 8 pin connector from the old harness, and connect it up to the new harness using just 6 pins. The old 8 pin connector will then plug into his existing 8 pin TCI connector. There would be the 7 wires coming from the TCI box, but only 6 wires leaving from the 8 pin connector going into the harness.

Retiredgentleman you are totally correct. I had it assbackwards.
Not once both in both threads.
If your going to do it go all in huh. :wink2:
Thanks for getting me back on the right track.

Its ok. I speak fluent lysdexia.... Wired up, I hope. Now to finish up some other odds and ends before I add fluids and see if I can get this thing to turn over.

If not for you, maybe someone else reading this can use this info.
If you have a 6 wire TCI box and a 7 wire harness. If you still have the 6 wire harness remove the plastic plug from the old harness. The wires come out. Now put the wires from the 7 wire harness in the 6 wire plug so they line up with the 6 wires from the TCI box. You will have an extra black/white wire, Cap this off.
Now it should work just fine.

Hi Taxcut,
AFAIK I don't have dyslexia, my problem (the one that's appropriate to this post, anyway) is my short attention span.
In either of your strings, did you say if your bike has the sidestand interlock switch and/or the clutch lever interlock switch?
Because if your bike don't have the switches and the harness is wired to need them, you gotta find a way to bypass those circuits or the bike will either quit when you put it in gear or won't start at all.

Well, currently there is no kickstand at all, just a center stand. I have no idea if it had either of these wiring mechanisms in its original form because I never saw it in its original form. I bought this project 80% stripped down already. I did run into a new problem tonight. I attempted to turn the bike over for the first time. Upon wiring in the batter I blew one of the 10amp fuses that are wired in parallel. I believe this has something to do with the electric start system that the bike has. The button on the bars is broke so I didn't think anything of it. Even when disconnecting the negative terminal to the battery, I am still blowing fuses..... Thoughts? At this point I think I am just going to remove one of the wires on the terminal for the electric start or hard wire in a toggle switch of some sort so that I know the circuit is broke. I was attempting to kick start the bike since I didn't plan on running an electric start at all once I passed inspection.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I spent half my day at work today running through possible issues I might have ran into tonight, this was not one of them....:banghead:
