Has anyone ever seen a different mechanical timing advance I.e Harley, Honda, kawasaski used in place of the oem Yamaha piece? A Harley advance seems like the most common and easy to find, driving prices way down...just saying

Amazing you should mention this.

I've never really liked the design of our mechanical advance. Tiny flyweight nubs fitted into narrow slots of the slotted disc, trying to precision control 12.5° of rotation over a short radius, all in a demanding/hot/vibrating environment.

I've rewelded mine to close-up those sloppy clearances, but it won't last very long.

Then, there's the issue of exploding aftermarket advance units.

Been contemplating building something like this:

Note how the flyweights control the central shaft over a much longer torque arm, loads spread over a larger area.
Also note how the return springs keep the flyweight fingers in constant contact with the central shaft's arms, eliminating timing 'jitter'.

Another 'blue sky' project...

Gary is right on

Unless you like to spend all your time in the garage fiddling, and fiddling and fiddling, its time to move onto modern technology.

Things like mechanical advance, points ignition, and mechanical regulator are best placed into a museum, as they have no place nowadays on cars/trucks and bikes.

You rang? Yep, that's my world.

Been pondering this for quite awhile. Dumping all my 'last century' gobbledygook.

My shop is kinda like a museum. Like a hoarder, hard to turn loose.

Similar schism found in the homebuilt and kit plane hobby. Some folks will build a plane, test it, then immediately sell it to finance the next build. Others just want to fly...

Setting local guys' points and timing funds my beer and pretzel habit, lol.

gary i get what youre saying as far as the "set and forget" aspect goes. but the E-advancer is 94 bucks. my situation doesnt exactly permit a pamco swap with an E-advancer. thats why i am on the hunt for a cheaper, more available, and more reliable option to the oem advancer. in a perfect world id just do that however haha

Hmmm... Looks ike a 60's 70's advancer out of a ford. Cheap on ebay.
But how to connect it to the advance rod on a 650? Hmmmm.....
I happen to have a old distributor from a 289 small block ford..hmmmm...
How would the "tangs" fit? N
Need to take a closer look. Hm.....

$92...................How much time and money is an alternative replacement to an original Advance going to cost. Bet you won't be saving that much

The Brembo is going to cost way much more than a rebuild and compared to the gain in braking power in relation to a smooth running no more hassle E-advance, i know where i would be
