I don't like it.

Yea, go figure. Get a group of guys together that have a love/hate relationship with old outdated motorcycles......and then throw change in their face. Watcha gona get??????:gun::guns::boxing::cussing::poo::agree::wtf::poke::devil::umm::devilish:

I've been down this road a couple of times and both times the reason for the change was to make life easier for the folks running the show. Since I don't pay for any of this I figure they can do what they want and I can just get used to it or move on. I'm new here so I'm not so set in my ways. Heck, I just got a smart phone a few months back and STILL don't know how to use it correctly. I gota feeling that you folks that don't like it right now......will get used to it in time. Hope so, anyway.

Funny thing was the first time the forum changed I was talking about people stormed off mad as hell.......it took months for some of them to come back.....they said the "new" forum wasn't as friendly and they wanted the "old" friendly format back....they also said that the owner was a greedy bastard for making the change and the site would never be the same. Well.......fast forward a few years later......the site grew from 662 members to over 3500. Time for another upgrade and guess which members started shouting how friendly the "new/old" format is and how unfriendly the "new/new" format was going to be. Go figure.

:p:Do_O:geek::love::laugh2::lmao::heart::laugh::laughing::redface::shootme::twocents: look for the good my friends........it's buried in here somewhere.:pimp::woowoo: damn.......I'm liking all the new similes already:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I don't disagree with you Gordon, and have also been down the same path on various snowmobile boards. Like Royboy said, about us old farts.......................

Yes Dave......I'm one of those old farts too. If you're the same fellow I "think" you are (we've talked via e-mail?) then I figure your the kind of person who doesn't mind helping out........you have a right to an opinion and should be able to voice it......I might have come off as disagreeing with you......and in a way I was but I do understand your side of it.

Hope our paths cross one day and if and when it does......the first round's on me.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Gordon in NC.......stepping off his soapbox........now where the heck is THAT simile???????

Guys, the site had to change. The software it was running on was from about 2008. Servers run on things like apache and php. The versions have a limited life span and then are no longer supported (think of Windows XP). You are supposed to upgrade every couple of years.

This is a new server running all of the latest versions of everything. It's faster, more secure, and is in the beginning of it's life cycle. The old software was so out of date, it wouldn't even run on this server. This new software wouldn't even run on the old server.

Also, old un-patched software is more vulnerable to security threats. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the old 650 Rider site right now. It's too old to run on new servers and it's been hacked recently and can't easily be updated because the software is old and obscure.

You guys are lucky the old site stayed the same for so long. It was running vbulletin version 3.8. vBulletin is now on 5.2. I could have done minor upgrades every few months, and two major ones by now. The major ones would have been on same scale as this as far a changes go.

That being said, the change isn't that big of a deal. It's still a discussion forum. Once you get used to the new software and how much easier things are, you would never want to go back.

Some reasons to like the new software:
  • New software should mean better security, less spam, and faster speeds.
  • The software does a much better job with pictures. You can upload huge 14mb photos and the software will size them down.
  • The whole site is responsive. No crappy mobile skin. Images scale, menus scale, the "blocks" of content shift as your screen width becomes smaller. This is almost a requirement these days with 30-50% of traffic coming from phones.
  • Private messages are now called private conversations.. They're easier to read, and you can have attachments.
  • You can mention people in your posts @gggGary if they aren't a part of the thread and they will be notified of the mention.
  • You can like peoples' posts and media. I'm hoping this will promote positive help and not know-it-all jerk attitudes.
  • The search is better. Searching for a word like wire and will also search for wiring, wires, wired, etc.
  • You can rearrange your pictures in albums
  • Alerts
  • Support. VB is dying, Xenforo is flourishing with developers and big sites transitioning to it.
  • Tons more I can't think of at the moment.
To the comments about the reason for the change to make life easier for the folks running the show... It was a lot easier to let the site slide on the old software until it slowly died or got hacked. I have spent soo much time working on this upgrade (for 3 sites). I have a couple of hundred of hours into it so far and I'm not nearly done yet. I've also spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on software, add-ons and themes.

The upgrade is to ensure the future of the site. For you, for me, for everyone. Give yourself a few days to get to used to it and learn its features, and then we can talk about what needs to be improved.

Interfaces will keep changing, everywhere. I know Its a lot of work keeping things up to date.
Thanks Travis We will all get use to it.

Looks like its time for a new avatar

As long as i can type and the site keeps
Up im happy. Some other forums im on glitch out and my typing only shows half of what i type . Change sucks, but same ol' is worse. I dont want to see our beloved bikes become useless just because the majority of us use this site to keep them running. Its because of this site i became confident enuf to work on my 2003 suzuki marauder that hadnt ran rite since I bought it one year old. Travis gave me an avenue to become secure in knowing i could just come here and learn basic knowledge about motorcycles. Sure....ive been riding trial bikes since i was a pup, but if not for him, and this site, ide still be riding a unsynced, poorly jetted ,rusty head bearing, mno charging 1980 xs650.
Thanks travis, myour one of the good ones. Ide like you, mbut havent figured that out yet.
Btw, do we have a face book page to post just random doings? Like local shows, up comming gatheringrs? Nothing too intense, just a heads up in the modern world of vintage doings. Kind of a random blog?

Its different but we will all get used to it. At the end of the day though, i don't much care what the forum looks like. Im just thankful that it exists in the first place!:bike:

its looking really good so far .
Bloody well done Travis that must have been a huge amount of work.....

I for one am extremely grateful that I can come here and get my daily fix and keep in touch with fellow XS650 owners and cyber buddies around the World all for free. I'd be really down if we lost this site and all the priceless information and experience stored here. My only concern always, is that all the info is backed up and can never be lost ....like the idiots managed over on LCGB UK last year..

To the comments about the reason for the change to make life easier for the folks running the show... .

Well since I was the one who mentioned that, let me clarify my statement. It should have read "in the long run......it made life easier for the folks running the show.

The web site I was referring to (motorcycle related) now has 9120 registered users. The first format change was made because a bully had shown up and admin didn't have a way to keep him off the board. No matter what they tried he would keep coming back....hence format change number 1 and life was easier for all involved. Format change number 2 was needed because of spam and hacking......both had become problems and something needed to be done. Format change number 2 and life was easier for the fellow who ran the site because he didn't have to deal with that anymore......or at least it was easier to deal with.

There is no way I was saying a format change was easier than just doing nothing.......I have no clue how much work is involved but have a basic understanding of the process. Where we have to enjoy wrenching on our motorcycles......admin has to "sorta" enjoy wrenching on this computer stuff or he or she wouldn't do it. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into something like this site and in no way was I trying to downplay any of that.

Change is always difficult the older I get, but it happens. It's different, I'll get used to it. Thanks to Travis et al for maintaining this awesome community!

Just found pics are now super easy, you can drag and drop them from an open explorer window into your post, done! Worth the price of admission right there. Curmudgeons unite! The earth is flat damn it!
