I have I 76, i guess they call it the shouldered rim? Basically water will sit in it when wet. I think it's aluminium I'm looking to buy or trade for a later style rim will it still lace up the same if it's 36h? Thanks (And also if any one has one laying around I would trade or buy just the rim).

All Standards from 70-79 have 19" front and 18" rear, wheel rims.

70-73; were chrome on steel rims and were the WM type profile http://www.mikesxs.net/products-56.html#products

70-71; had a drum front brake so the 19" front rim wont interchange with the 72 and later hubs without a set of specially made spokes made for them. 18" rear is a straight swap

72-73; 19" front and 18" rear, chromed steel WM type rims are a straight swap into the 74-79 standard hubs

74-79; Standards had the Alloy H type, (mud-catcher common name), 19" front and 18" rear, wheel rims. http://www.mikesxs.net/products-56.html#products

79 Special II, 80G Special II and 81H Special II, had 19" front and 16" rear, spoke wheels. These rims were the WM type profile with alloy rims on the 79 and chrome on steel rims for the 80-81

The other option is to buy a set of WM type rims from MikesXS

Have a look through the bikes in this link as a reference http://www.xs650.com/threads/xs650-...workshop-manuals-and-other-information.30569/

Hi xs65071,
like Skull sez, any style of XS650 Standard wheels will drop straight in and there are aftermarket wheel components also available.
Plus the cast wheel and megaspoke wire wheels will also work if you can live with a different rear wheel size and some frame modifications if you switch to a rear disk brake.
But why do you want to swap them?
The deep groove (AKA dogpiss-catcher) rimmed wire wheels are the best looking of all the available XS650 wheel options.

I will add, (now that Fred has put the cat among the pigeons),..............XS650 Specials with mag wheels..............

All Specials have 19" front and 16" rear.

78SE, 79SF, 80SG; Have disk brakes on the front and rear so a swap into a Standard or Special Spoke wheel model would necessitate frame and swing arm modifications and Brake actuator change. Not a straight swap.

81SH; Has Mag wheels with the 16" rear mag having a drum brake. This year/model is a one off in the US, having a set of Mag wheels that are a direct swap into a Spoke wheel models without any frame, swing-arm or brake actuator modification.

Again, have a look at the model ID thread i linked to to compare the information given against the relevant models.

In addition & FWIW:-
The disk rear to drum rear swap needs either swapping in a drum brake swingarm or welding a second torque-arm stay mount onto the disk brake swingarm.
We chose to dual-purpose the existing swingarm but didn't need to modify the disk brake frame at all when wire-wheeling my son's 1980 Special.
And of course you'll need to find the complete drum brake package, not just the wheel, but the pull-rod and pedal-arm too. All those parts do just bolt in and the pedal itself fits the drum brake pedal-arm. Mind you, hooking up the rear brake light switch took a deal more effort than we'd supposed it would.
& FYI:-
the cast drum rear may have been a one-off in the USA but the Canadian Specials ran them until end of production.

I just didn't want the deep style rim it gets corroded faster because water stays in them I may just keep it and powder coat it thanks for all the info.

1st of all .........NO I did not say that.

2nd ...............Not all wheels are interchangeable with every model.

Get your facts right and read the posts properly

If the rims aren't oxidized they are relatively easy to keep clean, just need to give them a wipe down after every/most rides. And park undercover.
