Certifiably insane asking prices

Shinko $60 tires, I like my Shinkos, but still, those are $60 tires. I paid $8 for the KPH version of that speedometer. These are not rare bikes.

Bidding has ended, zero bids. I wouldn't build that bike for myself, but if that is what people want........I'm making copies of that listing and all of the pictures. How many of us could build that bike without even a mock-up? I can see fitting the seat and electrics, disassembling and powder coating the frame, all straight forward from there. Wheels are blasted and PC as whole units, then bearings. Time? How fast can you powder coat and wait for parts from China?

Hi Scott,
that high-priced ad sounds like some kinda inter-family manouver.
Imagine the dialog:-
How much time and money have you put into that time-wasting pile of scrap already?
Counting all my time?
Of course counting all your time!
About $14K
You could have bought me a mink coat for that! Sell it sell it sell it.!
OK dear, I'll put it on E-bay.
Looks like nobody wants it, my love. I'll just have to keep riding it.

i just find the arrogance of that sort of thing galling... like the builders asking high 5 or even 6 figures for the ubiquitous S&S powered chopper.

i'm getting burned out on these hobby builds after 10 years. too much time, not enough return, and it's harder than ever to make a sale.

yeah galling is the word ....peoples greed really gets my goat like nothing else does.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that there are idiots out there that will actually pay well over the odds for things . I don't know whether its because they have more money than sense or because they cannot be bothered to search for a lower price or whether because some folk feel more satisified if they have been able to afford to pay more than everybody else ?

I reckon an increasing number of traders just stick the occasional ridiculous price tag on and see what idiots they reel in.
Why else would ebay sellers put a price tag of $100 on an item that every other seller is selling for $50 or less and are still making a profit ???

they're probably banking on having been featured on bikeexif and pipeburn with the rest of the hipster builds.

I say this as someone who most of you would probably describe as a hipster, with a very similar bike that I'd be lucky to get 5k for.

I was just chatting with my friends about these guys this weekend. Long story short, it's a garage builder out of Edmonton that actually just bolts stuff on. It's all about marketing and Instagram and looking cool. But the crazy thing is that it seems to be working really good for them. Rumor has it they sold one of their bikes for mid 5 figures at some show in the states. Just shows you that a lot of business is how you market your stuff. I'm actually dumb-founded that people pay for this but at the end of the day they're the ones laughing all the way to the bank.

Bolt ons or not, good for them.

What they get for their bike doesn't really add or subtract from your pocket.

The simple fact is this: What is a custom bike of any kind worth? Well.. whatever someone will pay.

If someone wanted to pay 5 figures for this thing then opinions aside, the fact is that that would be what it was worth.

I don't get why anyone really cares? If you're only building bikes to get the attention or to be able to rag on others than you may want to recheck priorities.

Less worrying about other peoples bikes/sales will give you more time for your own. And that's absolutely time better spent.

fair points.

Just can't help myself, have to calculate what it "is" compared to what they're asking, I was born that way. Also running through my head, I could touch some pre-war Harley knuckleheads for that sum.

Calculating the cost vs the price is one thing.

Ragging and complaining to people (who aren't the seller) is a reaction and completely voluntary. If you're not buying and paying the price, why care?

I hope you're not trying to make a living as a salesman, insurance agent, dealer, inventory buyer, etc.

If you actually read my post you would have seen that I wasn't ragging on them. All I said was they bolt stuff on and get paid for it. I think people who buy 650s at that price are suckers, but if that's what they want to pay then so be it. Out of all the posts on this thread this is the one you take issue with? Haha.

I own a fabrication/machining business. I am fully aware of the difference between doing a cost/profit analysis in relation to value and just getting your panties in a bundle because you can't accept the price of someone else's item for sale (That you're not actually interested in buying anyway.)

I stand by my statement. If you guys spent as much time focusing on your bikes instead of on what you consider absurd pricing on someone elses bike you'd be using your time more wisely.

Time is a resource. Unfortunately most people figure out all to late in life that it really is one of the only resources that you can't get more of if you run out. Use it wisely.

The entire tone of this thread has been to whine and complain because of the price, or because it's "just a bolt on parts build" etc. You even took the time to mention that you were discussing it offline. lol

I don't take issue with anything. I'm just calling a waste of time what it is.

Speaking of wastes of time, I'm gonna get back to using mine more wisely. This is turning back into a hair salon complain festival. :D
