So last weekend I picked up an XS650 for a song, mostly because it had a charging issue. Ran only when jumped and not on its own power...although it did run for a bit without jumper cables on when I was checking it out. I'm not new to motorcycles, but I am new to the XS650 and the bobber building world in general. My grand plans for the winter are to go with a big bore kit (learning towards Hoos Racing) and rephase the engine, yadda yadda yadda. Anyway, here are some pics, if you guys are interested and if there's any insight you might have from collective experience and wisdom. I'm curious about some of the chop work done to the frame...also not sure about the tank, might be an HD tank?

If you guys could tell me anything, that'd be amazing!

Hd tank . Bike looks just like my chop, but i used the chrome front fender for the rear. The neck looks stock, unless you are seeing something im not.
Now that wiring comming from the neck.......idk. If it works, just clean it up.

I was thinking the neck was stock because the welds look like 1970's factory...not the greatest, but solid. The wire hanging from the neck is just for the headlight. I took out the wiring harness for right now, trying to make sense of it. I need to see what the stator is putting out in terms of power and go from there.

HD sportster tank, right?

Start cheap.... Change the brushes for the alt. The should be more than 3/8 ". And polish the copper rings on the rotor, and test it. Manual says between 5 &7 ohms.
Search curleys charge guide for the low down. Since it at least runs on a jump, its just a charging issue. Dont go apeshit and scrap the whole charging system for a pma. I have a 71 with stock charge parts, 3 1980's with stock charge parts, and they work fine with a quality battery. Motto batt is my prefered battery. I have them in 3 of my bikes.

Welcome. Looks like it just needs some love. I would fix the charging issue and since it runs is a good thing. The yadda yadda yadda rephase and rebuild is big bucks. Depending on the condition of the motor and your wallet it might not be cost effective at this point and better spent on things needed. Brakes, clutches, battery ect. Hoose racing is a good place for motor work.
