Hugh's CDI Ignition

"A bit thin skin I think" yea but he did not call you a lire, he said once again "seller". I sell then and never lied. So now unless he appointed you as his spokesman I really don't care what you think and would appreciate you staying out. As a good friend say you can't win on those sites.. See now it has become a pissing match with someone who should have never gotten involved , that being you.. say what you want in response and I am sure you will , but I am done with this. Have a good, Gary

Lets step back and take a deep breath guys, these butt head matches never resolve a damn thing.

I personally would like to know who manufactures Hugh's ignition system.

Gary, What money I had saved up for the Probe ignition went for more engine parts and 80MM Arias KZ 1000 pistons,so I'll be re stuffing the piggy bank soon to farm out some work to you and Roger plus parts.......Later

Drop in sometime, it's not like you don't know where we are - haha :thumbsup

I did and you wouldn't tell me:laugh:

Bought four Arias 13.5 compression slugs for the project for a 149.00, not the Lottery but close enough for me:thumbsup:

Look familiar..? I've been bouncing this idea around in my head. Banshhe ignition on xs. Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like a stock banshee ignition system that has been degreed for the xs and got some pretty stickers. Funny thing is these kits cpl months ago u could get for under $180. In past two months they have almost doubled. Am I missing something....? I had plan on putting this kit on my xs with a variable advance box. But the prices have skyrocketed after release of this cdi.
Any body else thoughts on this? Go to fleabay and look up banshee ignition

I'm a cheapo and have most of these parts already just trying to wrap my head around it. Looks like same kit. U would have to degree the flywheel. Or put pickup in a different spot. Would this pickup n cdi box work without major overhaul. It's dual fire right? Looking at flywheel. Two magnets 180 apart. One pickup.? Or am I completely missing something here. I'm not the best with electronics. Working on it.
But if that the case then u could plug something like this to it...

Why is there no wiring diagram with Hughs latest CDI-system? I have problems which wire goes to 87a on the relay from the cdi-box. Have written him several times but no answer....!!! The plug from the cdi-box is missing the wire that is supposed to go to the relay 87a . Can someone tell me what color the wire from the cdi to 87a has?

You have emailed me once, asking about the wiring diagram. I do not have a full diagram, but the instructions are very detailed.

However, the 87a terminal connects to the Black/White Stripe wire from the CDI Box.

If you can't sort it out, send me pics of what you are concerned with via Email and we'll get you sorted out

Hugh

I mispoke, you did email me more than once, I just didn't see them all until this morning... I don't typically check my emails on the weekends, I spend that time with my family.

I received your photos, and have emailed a response accordingly. Let me know via email if that helps, I don't always get notifications from this site in time to be the most efficient in responses.

Any advice on my post? Will I be able to run a cdi box like above or is it a completely different map/program putting in on xs? I understand your trying to make money on these I just don't think it's reasonable for me personally when I have the ability to rekey flywheel. I have no knowledge of remapping cdi boxs. Can u run a variable advance like the one above on your kits? Can u answer that? Thanks hugh

I'm not 100% sure of the advance curve on the Banshee Boxes personally, we have out advance curve mapped based on Dyno Tuning from some folks in Canada who are doing all of this on a stock 76' XS650, and a 700cc Rephased XS650 - the map is the same for both engine setups which is nice. They flash the CDI's we use for us.

As for using the OEM Banshee Rotor Pickups, I'm sure it could work with enough effort, anything can with enough effort. We looked at using them, but the location was not ideal in fitting a pickup under the OEM Cover

I have seen a few folks use modified crank trigger/ pickups on some hillclimber bikes - but they are running total loss so its easier to get a trigger on the crank without a charging system.

Excellent. Thanks man. I was hoping that wasnt the answer but something told me it wasnt that easy. Specialy cause the advance on that box goes to a high revving two stroke. So my biggest problem would be trying to find a cdi with the right setting that runs on it. I don't have the parts or cash to test this out but if u ever get a chance. It would be great answer to find out if a variable cdi box would work with this.. That would open up a whole field of tuning.... And just be plain cool.
I'm still wanting to make this happen. So I'm bout to research the shit outta this and get an answer

I built an ignition for my VW Powered Rock Crawler one time using GM Pickup, a lump ring on the crank, custom ECU and Coil Packs. Anything can be done if you are patient and willing to play a little bit for sure...

Have fun with it! I did a ton of trial and error on my first custom ignition years ago - but it worked a charm once I had it dialed in.

U give me confidence man...thanks. Hopefully I can figure something cool/different out with this. I've got one more question while your here answering.just to help understanding d the advance in the xs. A mechanical advance. Does a mechanical advice have one point of advancement? Or does it continually advance with the RPM? Example. At 3500 it opens and advances. Or does it advance as it goes? "Centrifigal like". Hit 1500 advances hit 2500 advance... So on so on...
If I'd only need one point of advance it would be easier to find similar items...rather then find something close to the "centrifugal" advance? It that makes any sense...hah

The stock advance mechanism is nothing more than an auto-retard for starting. The timing is maxed out when you are going down the road. As long as you can start it, you don't need any advance mechanism. Just set it for full advance all the time.

I've been running my bike with the timing "locked out" for years. I originally set it up so the initial advance could be adjusted independent of the total advance. I tried all different initial advance settings from 5 degrees to full advance. Full advance gave it the smoothest idle, crispest take off, cooler running and better gas mileage.

The only potential downside to locking it out at full advance is harder starting. You either need to retard the timing (like the stock setup) or kill the spark until after the motor is spinning. If you are running batteryless then it will automatically "kill" the spark until the motor is spinning. More accurately, it will not produce a spark until the motor is spinning. By the time the rotor is spinning fast enough to produce a spark, the crank has enough inertia to overpower the burning fuel mixture and you won't get kick back. Simple and effective.

I guess I'm complete lost then. I've also thought an advance adjusted or retarded your timing it order to run better. So what your saying it's your spark is hitting at the same degree whether your at 1k or 8k rpms??? That can't b right....I mean maybe. Just seems odd. If the timing is maxed out then it must not be running right at higher rpms? An advance curve changes your firing degree per rpm(whatever it's programmed at) right? Am I having a complete brainfart? So what your saying is an xs can run GOOD with the ignition firing at the same degree thruout the RPM range??? Or just you have run it like that. ?

I want to make my own ignition setup. Am I just way over thinking this? Is it really as simple as a magnet a pickup a coil and a plug????
