Thoughts on flair ups in the classifieds

Straight Up....Using the classified listing section should be a benefit of being a member of the forum in good standing for some (tbn) period of time and for one who has also made a contributing donation to the site of some minimum $tbn.

The site does not operate at zero expense and it will be taken advantage of if it continues to try to supply free lunch. In other words, I see a classified ad service priviledge as a benefit which should be for qualified supporting membership....only.

Trav; what about moderating new members for X# of posts? There are a few members who would be willing to share the load. I do that on a different group. the moderators could vet classifieds till they meet the standards in the sticky. It would require the moderators to take a no hogging the deals pledge, hmmm on second thought...

I call it road rage on the information superhighway. Internet road rage. The solution is within, not without. Or not whatever the opposite of within is. Grasshoppas.

cbrforum.com requires 100 posts before using the classifieds - that might be a little steep, but it does insure not too many people sit there and make a "good work" post on 100 threads and then start hawking their stuff.

Moderators also are pretty strict about the for sale posts - must require pics of what's being offered, as well as the location of the seller, or the post disappears after a day.

Usually someone begins bitching about the policy, typically after they've tried selling stuff without following the rules and the post disappeared.

*edit* also posts in the "Off topic" forum don't count toward your total post count.

^ Yes, lots of forums are heavily moderated and lots of people don't even notice it. Some do notice it and love it, others hate it. People already bitch about the simple rules we have here. Can't please everyone.

Post in The Lounge (off topic) don't count here either.

In my opinion, this whole thing isn't really even a problem yet here. I chalk this up to good brainstorming for when it becomes a real problem.

That CBR forum "rule" was rather flexible. I was posting parts ads with in a few days of joining with no hassles. Guess it's my honest face?

I'm new here and just happened to stumble across this topic. I think it was gggGary that said something about pictures, price, location, phone nimber, etc. I am usually over a the H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com) and I think they have a pretty well setup/ well organized classfieds section. Just my .02...

Ok I'm new to this forum and I don't belong to any others.I joined for the purpose of selling my collection of XS650 stuff. I will make no pretense about my intentions but I will say I tried to make a donation and the process is not working but I will try again if I decide to post in classifieds. From what I see on this topic this would some how offend some who have spent lots of time posting and interacting with " like minded " souls and sharing technical wisdom. I don't have time or need for that. Not being familiar with the culture here, I don't know if the somewhat hostile comments were from the vocal minority or echo the majority opinion. Unless you have everything you want and need.It would seem to me the smart thing to do would be to encourage anyone to post even non members. They might have exactly what you are looking for dirt cheep. This type of "us and them" mentality is why I don't wave at other bikers. After over 48 years of riding I have met way to many A hole bikers, and you can't tell which ones are by just passing them on the road. It is obviously easier to tell on a forum. I will forgo the posting of my bike and engines and avail myself of the dozens of other options.

Well shit sounds like we just lost the opportunity to get some parts we/someone might need/want.
And the dude was even willing to donate to the site. At face value I'd say the members here lost out on that deal.

Gotta wonder about that, Dan. I've never seen anyone flamed in the Classifieds here, have you? Looks to me like this guy read some posts that are over 5 years old that brainstormed a question and left the policy of an open Classifieds forum in place, and used them to find an excuse to bitch. If he did get comments he didn't like in an ad thread he must have set himself up for it. As I read it his post reeks of arrogance and bad attitude, and I have a hunch folks might be better off not doing business with him. I know I wouldn't. As for making a contribution, he claims he made the effort and it failed. I guess he could have the benefit of the doubt on that one, but I'm too mean spirited to give it to him.

grizld1, yes I have seen a quibble or two and some name calling but all in all it works. As I said in my post, at face value, we lost support and product opportunity.

I must admit that it does annoy me sometimes when folk join up just to post something for sale and don't even have the courtesy to introduce themselves .
I think that is just downright rude and discourteous.

My feeling is that new members listing stuff for sale should at least be required to introduce themselves .

Its like the frequent posts you see asking for help and advice from members that have been a member for years, have maybe 3-4 posts and have never introduced themselves or contributed anything to the community. The only time you see them post is when they need help with something. often they'll then get arsey when they don't get an immediate answer or don't like the replies. Its like they think we are just here as a free advisory service for them

I continue to be happy with the classy's here. You post something that is clearly not true or may be covering up relevant facts and we have guard dogs on you like stink on poo. LOL If your skin is too thin to advertise on the internet so be it. It usually means you are plannning on pulling some wool and hate the light. It's like any other forum post with a few Do-nots thrown in to keep the hounds leashed. Lot of my stuff has come and gone here. Much prefer a lower selling price without the ebay hassles But seriously if I want it gone now ebay has a higher sales ratio, other than hot ticket items; NEW PMA PAMCO chooper boober parts etc.priced right seldom make it a day unsold here. For complete bikes CL rocks hardest. Many times Euro and oceana buyers are on my CL posts near instantly. I get "other brand" parts in clean up the garage buys sometimes and it's great to be able to quickly get them on other forums with out rigmarole.

I have to agree with @grizld1 on this. Why come here, sign up, then resurrect this 6 year old "brainstorming" thread for no reason when you haven't even posted in the classifieds or anywhere yet, and then decide to leave? Makes no sense.

BWHAHAHAHA. OK I give.
Tom V. fuck you and the horse you rode in. We don't want or need your donations or XS650 stuff.
That better?

On another note, his post makes no sense or no good sense according to who's definition of good sense?
And while we are here, define sane.

Man, there are some sick puppy's on this form. I tried to give a donation again. Same error message as before. Someone should check into that problem. I again felt compelled to offer a donation before I commented on the responses. I started out to post a sweet running bike with a 750 kit on it and 4 engines 2 frames and assorted parts as a package at an absurdly good price. Before I did I thought I should figure out the requirements and format. THATS how I ended up in this particular topic. I thought introducing myself was reasonable and good manners. But after reading the apparent consensus was, I had to earn the privilege of posting by committing to an absurd number of comments (up to100). I don't have time for that I don't need it, don't want it, have no use for it. I bought my first. XS650 in 1976 the same year I became a certified MC mechnic, so I don't need advise from here to fix my bikes. I have a real life so I don't need friendship. I wanted to make this stuff available to some people who really appreciate these bikes like I have for 40 years. But the elitist mentality from some winning bitches left me thinking I should take my stuff someplace else least it end up in the wrong hands. And I say to weekenderider, run before it's to late. You had an opinion of your own for a minute then you joined the herd. With that my notification is off and I'm outta here.

Tom V, FYI..............People posting in the Classifieds were not reading the rules, (simple as to the right heading, "For Sale" "Trade", "Wanted" in their adds) and this was policed buy some. Posters sometimes complained, "why they should be policed by other members", and this caused some friction. This thread was started about 1 year into the Classified section operating and was started as a discussion on "how to".

This site has relied a lot on committed members to help run the site and self regulate, (under the rules) and govern out any unwanted, argumentative situations.

A lot of initial members come from another site that folded and used their knowledge to help make this site as friendly as possible and enforced the few rules that this site operates under. The site that closed was unruly and not moderated properly.

How many sites this large have only 2 moderators, (1 the owner and the second a member), and they are rarely heard in that capacity.

If you feel grieved that was not caused by any interaction with any other members, only a 6 year old thread putting forward some thoughts without rancor. In your first post you allude to "meeting to many A hole bikers" and would rather lump others into that category. (wont wave to them), until proven otherwise. You also complain about how you can't donate, and this is put back onto the site as not welcoming you as well as using this thread to make a decision on how this site is run and again, making out it is the sites fault so you won't post an add in the classifieds..........................our loss........................No .............

Gentlemen, we've pointed out that the thread in question was a discussion only, is 6 years old, and did not result in any restriction of access to the Classified ad forum. Anybody with eyes and a brain to read with can see that the discussion in that thread was conducted with civility and that there were no rancorous attitudes expressed. And "Tom V" keeps coming back with the same bogus accusations, based on that discussion. What's his problem? Maybe he figures a few "elitists" will think badly of him while his ad runs?

Actually, I don't think he has a problem. Among the many tactics used by Internet trolls is this: Make an accusation, cause the target to explain that the accusation is baseless, then repeat the accusation, with increasingly negative characterizations of the target, until the target is upset and ranting. "Tom V" has started a round of that game. If it walks like a duck, etc.... I suggest that we drop this discussion; any further replies will only give him what he wants.

I know I am fairly new to the forum, but I think you'll notice I've jumped in with both feet and this is not my only forum, so I hope this will be well recieved and a good discussion. To me a forum is a community born of common interest where you gain and strengthen new relationships.

I can't help but notice that recently a new member will show up, post in the classifieds first thing...no intro or anything and proceed not to read the rules, etc. Very quickly a flair up ensues.

I was thinking...no intro...no access to classifieds? Or maybe a minimum # of posts first to show you are here for the forum and not just hustling a part? Or somehow no access to classifieds unless first thread is accessed through the rules link? I have no idea how you would set that last one up...lol...just throwing out random ideas.

Any thoughts?

Decided I wanted a 1978 XS650E.
Registered and posted an intro.
Placed a WANTED in the classifieds.
Purchased the bike within a month of joining.
Now the fun begins with the restoration.
Requiring a minimum post count would slow the process.
I'll be making plenty of post in this process.
