Bringing back to life my 77 which has been sitting for 5 years. So I have one problem with the old gasket being stuck on the case where the oil cover goes. I've seem some threads about getting that off. My plan is PB blaster and a rag to cover the opening and a tapered wood stick so not gouge the case and some patience. I am worried about the oil filter gasket being tattooed to the back side there (see pic). I am concerned that the gasket isn't going to come out in one piece.... based on the other gasket, I don't expect it to either. I have not even attempted to remove that yet. I am hoping someone has a solution... It's a 77D mostly standard.

Use paint stripper. It will soften and pretty much melt the old gaskets away. It will take several applications, gently scraping off the softened parts in between. I would block off the oil ports. Maybe you could whittle down some short lengths of wooden dowel to stick in them.

From what you've discovered, obviously don't use any gasket sealer on the new gaskets. I just oil mine up with plain motor oil.
