I have a set of empty 650 cases. Does anyone know of somebody or someplace I could send them to verify they are in good shape? I am building a bike with everything either new or refinished. it has an 11000 mile engine that I ran prior to taking the bike apart. The head and cylinders are coming off due to low compression on the left cyl. and the fact that it did not run for 33 years. don't really trust the valve springs. Anyway the valve cover, head and cylinder will be easy to refinish but the cases will not. So I was thinking that if I had a set of refinished cased, I would just transfer the internals out of my old cases into the fresh ones.

Doug, I am by no means an expert, but have been down the road with pulling my engine completely apart, with it now back together. I'd look at the following:

- are the sealing surfaces marred in any way that might prevent a good seal with sealer down the road for the case halves, sump filter, and the gasket surface for the cylinder?
- are the threaded studs in good shape?
- other threaded locations pass inspection
- oil passages clear?
- cracks or any glaring dents, signs of carnage?

The gang here knows way more than I do, but that's where I'd start...

yes all those things I can do and that would be enough if I were planning on reusing my cases. with using the other cases, in addition to those things, I am concerned with bearing bores and alignment. Perhaps, those things are not an issue as long as a bearing hasn't spun in the case. Im just not comfortable that a good visual inspection is enough

I have a good set of cases from a running bike 2FO Cases 1977
$100.00 shipped in USA If your's don't work out. I would replace all the seals on any set of cases you take apart.

Hi Doug,
compare the extra cases to the cases that you already have. And WTF is wrong with wrong with using the existing cases anyway?

Only convience. Im just thinking that having a nice set of detailed refinished and maybe powder coated cases would be nice to have. True, I could do the same thing with cases I have but that leaves me with a disassembled engine for some time with many things to remember and parts to keep tract of whereas lifting a gear set or a crank assay out of one case and moving it to a new case leaves me with little to have to remember {manual not withstanding} So if it doesn't cost a fortune to do, why not?

If you are looking at learning and doing it on your own. I do Have a crank and trans that I can sell with the matched set of cases.. Shift forks are still in cases .You can then buy new seals and build a spare bottom end and learn without taking yours down yet.
CASES TRANS CRANK $175.00 shipped in USA

not really trying to learn anything. This idea is strictly for cosmetic reasons. The cases just will not look as refinished as the rest of the bike so they will have to be disassembled to be media blasted and perhaps powder coated. I have an extra set of cases and if they prove to be in good shape I will do all the cosmetic work on them and then simply transfer the innards from the ugly cases to the fresh ones.

Anybody have an example of drilled and opened up left side cases? I'm wanting to possibly shave the chain oil spray protector off, but also want to drill out ports around the counter shaft area. I know venting the mag/electronics is a mod to consider and may only consider drilling the inspection cover...or making one. My project shouldn't see rain, more of a mancave, around the town and up the river summer toy. Still it will get washed and some chain wax applied.
Post some patterns to consider if you can, Thanks!

So the original frame and engine must not match also right. If they do I would not want to separate the two. In Wa do you need to supply the engine number on your title.
