Hi guys,
I've just bought an xs2 as a project and I didn't get an ignition key with it. Does it need a key or will this bike never have had a key?
Can someone give me advice on how to start it without a key pleaseeeee

Thanks!

If it's stock; think this is the 72 diagram, kinda obvious what needs to be jumped. The iggy switch is easy to pull apart, hand the cylinder to a real lock smith he'll make a key.
In this diagram red is battery red/green is iggy, brown is everything else. Tie those together. Most years red to brown is all you need to do.

Hi Ash,
depending on the model year XS650s came with 3 or 4 locks with one key to work all of them.
Besides turning the ignition on, without the key you'll need to find a way to open the gas cap,
lift the seat and set the steering lock.
At least one of the locks may have a 4-digit number on it that identifies the key.

Ahh interesting!!
Its a 1972 XS2. the seat is already off, the gas tank is already stuck open and I cant see anywhere you'd even be able to put a key! Where am I looking? Surely I cant have missed all these key holes! haha

I don't think the gas cap or seat locks came along for another couple years. You probably only have the ignition switch and fork lock.

70, 71, & 72 never had a locking seat or locking tank.
They also had a different key for the steering lock and the ignition.

73 was the first model to have a locking tank - same key for ignition, steering lock and tank (but not a seat lock until later models).

Key no should be on the ignition switch.

your seat on the bike is off a 74-76 Standard, Same pan used on the 74-79 Standards, foam and cover changed slightly on the 77D/78E and more radical on the 79F.

This is how the front of my xs2 looks..
I've got both the clocks but that's also where i was expecting the key to be

To help save confusion and time, use the correct terminology. You're saying you don't have the Ignition switch, Saying you have not got an Ignition key means no key.

The information we have is you need a new key so your getting advice based on how to replace the key.

I thought that was where this thread was going, no ignition switch instead of no KEY.

Is there another switch of another kind added to this bike that could have been used to connect the ignition circuit?

Scott

I have neither.
No ignition switch and no key.
That's why I was asking if this bike needed a key at all.
The bikes 20 years older than me so there's a lot of things I don't know about it haha.

Yeah this is what I was wondering. The bike came pretty much in bits so I wasn't sure if what I was looking for was just missing or if it wasn't there to start with. I think it's jist missing though

Time to start tracing some wires. If you look at the diagram Gary posted, follow the red wire from the rectifier to see where it goes. It should lead to a main switch, but you never know. But it's a start.
