I just finished putting in my new starter gear, actually just the clip I had to reuse my old gear, how do I test it before putting the side cover back on to make sure it is working properly, unplug the spark plugs??? Thanks!

Thanks, but should I disconnect something so the engine won't start, since I have no oil in it.

Ditto, and if you are running any kind of aftermarket ignition, pull the ignition fuse so the circuit board doesn't toast.

How long has the oil been drained out 63?
You can measure the tension on the drag clip using a fishing scale. That way, you won't have to do any of that motor cranking. Details are here .....

Many times a brand new drag clip is too weak and needs to be tweaked.
