I'm restoring a 77 XS650 to stock condition. It came in blue and a red maroon that year. Both color decals are available from Diablo for 99.00. Which color do you think was more popular back in 77, and which would more valuable today. I like either. Thanks for the feedback.

I've come to really enjoy my 77 in 'maxi maroon', but 'bountiful blue'...swoon.

That's just me. Others swear by the maroon as catching more compliments.

Any chance you can investigate the original color of your bike? Maybe the underside?

Hi Vintage and welcome,
Red or blue? Can't decide? Flip a coin. Or run a poll if you want to be guided by a majority.
Me? Eff the originality and squandering $99 on stock decals.
Paint it Gloss Black with pin-striping and Yamaha Triumph-swoosh tank decals in gold.

My resto'd 77'D was Maroon from the factory. I debated other color choices when a repaint was necessary but in the end I went with a brassy red /maroon color from Ford and while it's a bit redder than the Yamaha stock color it looks right and gets lots of compliments. On the subject of decals I had these done by a local auto graphics shop and applied them under the clear coat. Absolutely a match for stock and much cheaper and easier to apply.

My 1st new street bike was a '77 XS650. I had a choice of the blue or maroon and picked the blue. Now 40 years later, I like the maroon.

More valuable? You're never going to get your money back from a restored XS650, so why even consider that as and important point?

Oh, blue is the correct color - that's what mine is.
