The 2017 Smoky Mountain Dogwood Rally

We allowed an ST1300 at the Ozark Rally last year, it rained every day. Just say'n. LOL You gotta go MaxPete!

Pete: I rode down to this one last spring on my DL1000 V-Strom and no one asked me to cover it with a bag! Couldn't unplug the vest until I was south of Pittsburgh, though.
Last fall I rode the FJ-09 down to XS SE and a red one showed up to keep it company. It doesn't seem to make any difference what I ride, though, the southerners on their 650's are always waiting for me to catch up!
It's worth it to go to the Dogwood Rally because Marty makes sure we get at least two feeds of real NC BBQ. Being an northerner as well as an alien I have no idea as to where Arkansas BBQ at the Ozark Rally fits in the taste spectrum.

A few pics of last spring's Dogwood rally. No one is concerned if a vintage bike comes on a trailer, so long as it is unloaded to be ridden.

Thanks Gary and yeahhhh - I understand ya gotta watch those ST bikers. That thing is sort of like a Klingon Battlecruiser of motorcycles: big, homely but danged fast and powerful.

I'll bet it could tow my XS650 faster than it could propel itself.

Pete

Put a sidecar cart on that ST and haul the XS down.

Now THAT is a good idea WER. All kidding aside, I had actually looked into putting a hitch on the ST and towing the XS down on a little trailer.

It would likely be the only time an XS650 had ever gone faster than 140 MPH (unless it had fallen off a cliff or been thrown out of an airplane, I suppose....).

Hmmmmm.....

That would be a lot of weight to trailer.
And I wasn't kidding about the sidehack hauler.
It ain't no step. . . .for a stepper.

Well......it really isn't all that hard and you can do it with all kinds of bikes......this is my 441cc bike hauling my 580cc bike.

BUT.......this year I'm not going to make the same mistake I made last year. No trailer and I'm taking off Friday so I can get there early. I'll be in cabin #5 and hope to see some new faces. I'll also be packing an extra clutch cable and a repair kit.......that way at least that won't let me down this time.

I've said it before, you're not going to get rid of me that easy. I let my brother borrow my XS and I need to get it back from him ASAP......he's already calling it "his" XS. Geeze that's what I get for trying to help a fellow out.

Good to see ya'll again.....been a busy few months for me but things are finally slowing down.

I can't say enough good things about that part of the country......or the fellow putting the ride on. It just doesn't get any better.

Take care and we'll see ya down the road.......Gordon in NC

For people from the north, the later in April, the more chance of the I-90 on shore breezes being a little more above freezing heading towards Erie before you head south.

Lakeview, heading South is the key.;) I was born and raised in Florida but have lived here in NC for over 30 years. I consider North Carolina "North". I can only imagine what it must be like in the "real" North. It's been warm enough here the past week to get some riding in.........nice. April around here can be iffy....might rain and it's been known to snow .....but it also could be in the 70s. At least the place will be coming back alive ( Hence the name "Dogwood" Rally).

Looking forward to meeting up with you fellows again. Can't wait to hear Marty's tale of the ridge and the Moto G.

Going to pickup my XS this weekend......going to swap him the KZP to keep him of my back about losing the XS. He fell in love with the XS.......rode one back in the 70's and had forgoten how much fun it was.

Take care and we'll see ya down the road..:bike:......Gordon in NC

Well, I have gathered up my courage to make the trek again this spring; booked a cabin for 21 - 23 April. Better not rain.

Actually, last spring being there was a real treat as all the ride down I was seeing Spring gradually getting more robust. Left Oshawa at 1 degree C, survived the long stretch of I-90 where the damp cold wind blows off Lake Erie, turned south at Erie PA and kept on motoring. Temps were not really welcoming until I was a ways past Pittsburgh.
Arriving in GA, the trees were all in leaf, the spring bulbs that were still a hope in Ontario were way past their prime and the dogwood was blooming. That and a couple feeds of real BBQ and how can one go wrong!

<snip> Better not rain. <snip>

Lakeview......good news hearing you're coming back. I know that's a long ride and my hat's off to ya.

The ONLY ways to make 99.9% sure it won't rain is to cancel the trip all together......or spend TONS of money on brand new rain gear.

Option #1 is out of the question.......but you could opt for Option #2??????????

See ya there.......Gordon in NC

As some anonymous wag once said when questioned about rain gear:
"sure, wet t-shirt, wet jeans"

The resort opened for the season yesterday. I'm headed up in a couple of hours. Two cabins remain for the Dogwood. I'll have to get with Mike about what's left upstairs in the lodge.
