Hello everybody I have a feeling I'm gonna have to remove a carb but I'm still new to the xs650 and didn't want to proceed without first getting your thoughts and ideas. My 1980 xs650 special has the mikuni bs34's. Recently I took carbs apart, cleaned and replaced all parts included in rebuild kit, seats, orings, needle valves, gaskets, etc Also installed a re-jet kit from 650central which included main, needle, and pilot jets. So today I discovered that my left float bowl isn't filling up quick enough, compared to the right which fills up normal; the left side drip drops out of needle valve. The slow flow persists even after I remove the needle valve all together and I even removed the little drum (needle valve seat) and the drip drop is still there. Is there a way to open up this flow without removing the carburetors and taking them apart?

On your 80 the fuel uses one petcock to feed both carbs through a "T" between the carbs. The left side of the "T" is probably partially plugged.
You might try leaving the float bowl off the left side, unhooking the fuel line from the petcock, draining the fuel from the line, squirting it full of carb cleaner. Let it soak awhile then blow through the line with an air hose. repeat as needed to clear the blockage.
If not then the carbs need to be removed, split apart so you can pull the "T" out and look through it. Then use carb cleaner and air, maybe a drill bit just a bit smaller than the "T" id to clear most of the blockage first.

Thanks Leo!, gonna try that again. I disconnected fuel filter blew some air through the Hose but didn't apply the carb cleaner and only attempted it once. Gonna do it again maybe a few times and use the carb cleaner in conjunction.

Hi Skubic,
try this:- Remove, the complete gas line so the one long line, the tee and the two short lines are an assembly in your hand.
Now get a fizzcan of any kind of cleaning solvent, poke it's stinger down each line in turn and push the button to wash all the crud out.
After you reckon it's all clean in there put the line back on the fuel petcock and turn the petcock to "prime".
If fuel flows nicely out of both carb lines you'll know the gas line is OK so reconnect the carb lines and check if the problem went away.

I wouldn't be putting carb cleaner in my fuel lines. Carb cleaner eats rubber, so I think you'd be asking for trouble doing that.

I'd try this - disconnect the fuel line from the petcock then remove both float bowls and float needles. Remove the float needle seat on the plugged side as well. Block the seat on the "flowing" side with a finger and blow compressed air in the line. That will direct all the air pressure out the plugged side. If you want to spray something in the line for flushing, use something mild like WD40.

Thanks for your replies fellas. I just finished putting her back together and took her for a spin...man she rocked! I have had issues with the left side since I built her which is right around the time I joined this site. Thought it was carb tuning, timing, or something more serious. Left exhaust ran cold, felt like it only ran on right cylinder. Left Spark plug was always wet and didn't look like it was getting spark. I replaced coil, plugs, wires, alt brushes, got unipods and got rid of the k&n pods, went back and forth on jet sizes and was getting pretty defeated, bike looked great but rode like crap. It turned out It was just the tee was not allowing enough fuel fast enough in the bowl so left carb was always starving and backfiring and lacking power...wow. When I rebuilt carbs it was leaking from the tee on both sides so I repaired it using some fuel line and the leaking went away. I did everything all of you suggested pretty much to clear it up and it all helped, one thing I noticed also helped was turning the tee up and down a few times and pushing it out to the right side a bit. I guess it was too far to the left and moving it up and down and pushing it to the right helped seat the tee and free it up some. Man now I need better brakes! Brakes are a bit scary lol especially with the rear sets, kinda wish I didn't install those, I think I had more leverage with the stock rear brake pedal, oh well will need to ride it and get used to it.
She runs great: did 650 central re jet kit with titanium adjustable needles 3rd slot, 135mj, 45pj, 2.5 turns out and sync'd carbs using a gauge tool I bought on eBay.
I have Omar's half mile exhaust and unipods, using coil from mikes and ngk wires, NGK iridium 7 plugs. Feels really strong and responsive. Thank you all for the help, I couldn't have built this without this site and all of your input. Never before this had I worked on a bike or carbs, I'm a turbo fuel injection guy, but I gotta say I had a lot of fun building it.

Hey guys thanks for all the advice on this. 5twins I did exactly what you suggested right down to the wd40 and got my right float bowl to flow very nicely. It fills up pretty fast.

Left bowl I thought was fine bc it has a steady drip but wondering if it's supposed to flow fast like the right side also or if a steady drip is good enough to keep the bowl full while riding.

I know I could ride and see for myself but wanted to get advice before putting the left carb back together again. Thanks all

Oh I asked a similar question on another post because I didn't realize I had started his thread a while back.

Well fixed it!
I carefully pried the T line between both carbs over slightly to the right while my petcock was open and kept prying until there was a nice even flow. Sweet! Gonna take her out tomorrow and test out my changes.
