I got a '75 XS650 last summer and have gone through it and other than a clutch problem which I'll put in another thread, it runs well. Problem is the PO removed the baffles from the mufflers and it's too loud. They are in good shape otherwise, and I'd like to keep them but I'd like to return it to as close to stock sound as possible. What are my options? I've seen some aftermarket baffles like these - http://4into1.com/emgo-baffle-pipe-insert-silencer-8/ but I'm not sure how to put them in or if they will reduce the sound enough. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Seriously if your going to ride the thing in trafic it NEEDS TO BE NOISY !!!!! I've had way too many close calls from cars with their windows rolled up air conditioner on and radio blairing to realise that People just Don't look for bikes ! if it's noisy they will know your there Regardless of their radio and closed windows !!!! I know the urg to go completely Classic ....BUT do it somewhere else, because you need the noise ! with the baffels in they are about half as noisy..... just enough to get you into trouble ! and trouble of that kind you do not want ! Trust me on this !

The stock pipes were not made so you can remove the baffles. You can run a rod or pipe up from the rear and knock out the plate that prevents the exhaust from blowing straight out, the exhaust has to flow into the baffle and then out the end of muffler.
If yours are not stock then anything might be possible.
Mike's XS has a couple exhaust sets, one looks like stock. Not sure about the sound.
As far as having loud pipes so cars can here you, not so much. They can't see if they are looking right at you.
Pics will help us help you.

The other side.............Loud pipes save lives, aren't these the same ABATE people that ride around with no helmets, often minimal lights, no horn, etc. ABATE did their thing in Michigan, grouped together bar owners at the borders to lobby for no helmet laws, said it would help our economy. Now my family members ride without helmets. Yeah, I'm for reasonably quiet bikes and helmet laws, and I don't drink and ride.

Leo - thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure the mufflers are stock - the rest of the bike was pretty unmolested and looks original. Pic attached. I think you're right about the plate being knocked out. I gave it a double colonoscopy and it looks like they were about 9" in from the end of the muffler, right where the baffle section starts. I think I can even see the remnants of the welds. Pic attached. If so, any suggestions for plugging it again to force the exhaust through the baffles?

I found some 1.25" expansion plugs that worked great. After grinding away some of the weld at the end of the pipe and some of the rough edges on the holes punched in the baffle, they slid right in. There were enough remnants of the original plate/weld to keep the plugs flat and keep them from falling through. I then had a welder tack them in place. Not elegant, but seems to work and they are a bit quieter - hard to tell since I hadn't heard it run since September. Still pretty loud but should be closer to the stock sound.

Clutch problem are mostly sorted out, although I had some trouble finding neutral after a test ride. Hope to get it to DMV this week, then I can really give it some exercise and get the last few things sorted out.
