Hi All, on my 82'XS650 there is a small plastic side plate Under the air box sideplate....
I am missing the one on the left side and was wondering what they are called .... any idea ?
I need to get one and put it on the left side and the bile will be back to stock in all it's parts ( not their useage but the parts are all there) .....
any idea where I can get one of those and how much it would run me ?
.....
Bob........

Could you show us a photo of what you do have and where it should go Bob?

I'm guessing the one you want is called a "left side lower side cover". Apparently you can buy them in the same store that sells hen's teeth, if you can locate that store.:)
Its common for them to fall off........................try the classified section on this site.

I had a heck of a time finding a replacement for one of mine for my'83. A nice Canadian fellow (they all seem to be, eh?) finally sent me one (from this forum). I replaced the rubber female receivers, and now it seems to hold tight.

Interesting - I had never seen one of those little guys on a any 650.

On my Special-to-Cafe bike, I would like to switch over to the metal rectangular shaped standard side covers ('79 and earlier style) because the top surface is horizontal which will match up with my cafe seat.

Has anyone ever figured out a good way of doing that swap - or is that going to be my excuse for finally springing for that welder so that I can attach the little tabs to the top rail of the frame?

I think the other side had a compartment that held a factory lock chain to secure your XS650 in bad neiborhoods.'82,'83 I believe...

It seems that the left side lower cover is the one everybody loses. I saw a pair for sale in the classifieds a week or so ago along with a pair of the uppers off an '82 or '83.........Ol' Hawkeye saw 'em and snatched 'em up!

MaxPete, ya need the tabs.....and then the little rubber cusion bumpers.

The bikes in my collection that I appreciate the most are the ones where I enjoyed the sale experience with a friendly owner who loved the bike. Here is a picture from the day (two years ago) I bought my '83 from a nice guy (pictured) who gave me all the spare parts (including a new chain), the factory workshop manual, owner's manual, and the factory lock chain !View attachment 98438

Bob,
Frankly, they are rather uncomplicated in their design. Perhaps you could fabricate a one dimensional flat panel to fit there. I could send you a tracing of the shape in an envelope. I have a '74 TY250 with side panels that are sometimes fabricated by owners.
