What have you done to your XS today?

I added some mikes on the SG. Will soon sand the alt. rotor contacts and change the stator's mounting screws to allenheads. The cover screws too. I like them better.

All is well, the 76 passed the safety, now waiting for my insurance broker to call me back. I will have to think of a 'Shwa landmark to photo in front.
Too bad the tire fire was put out (lol), maybe GM Canada HO sign, maybe a dude on south Simcoe with his shirt off (have to wait to May 24 for that), maybe on the hill overlooking the car factory that is being levelled - don't worry, I'll find something.

Modified license light holder to become new stoplight/ license light. Retains all stock mounts so I can restore to stock easily.
Original Taillight Bracket had to be modified so I could retain stock mounting location and keep wires under fender.
Added rear LED turn signals to clean up the rear (screws right into stock location)
Replace T/S Flasher Relay with LL552 from AutoZone (two prong, works great, but no more auto-cancel, which is fine by me)
Next up will be front turn signals. Now, lets go ride!

Today I started my swing arm brace. Held this up to a mock up bike with the swing arm in the lowest position and there seems to be plenty of chain clearance all around. I searched the swing arm threads but didn`t find any dimensions? Tomorrow I`ll make the side brace tubes then weld it up. So far I`m in it for under $4.00. Cheapest modification on the project so far.

As promised, here is a picture of the most Canadian things I could find in my tour of Oshawa, beavers on a rock and a Gov't tax building.
Forty miles on the '76 since I put it on the road, (heresy warning) it's an ok ride, need to put a windshield on it for sure, the foot pegs are right where my ankles want to be when I stop in traffic, brakes are ok for 1976, the supertrapps are more noise than I personally would like. OTH, it starts easy (po removed the electric start), nice and light around town, vibration not too bad, surprised to see how low first is compared to the rest of the steps between the gears. One can grab large handsful of throttle and not be 60 over in an instant. Rode it to the local HD dealer today where they were having Demo Daze, couple folks spoke to me about it, seems like everyone used to have one, stalled once for no apparent reason half way through ride but restart 2nd kick, but direction lights quit blinking or even going on so I came home and will have to fix that. Spark plugs look nice, though.SAM_5573.JPG
And yes, those are '75 side covers, just liked the looks of that metallic black finish.

Can a Mike's XS replacement be keyed to the original tumbler?

I wasn't aware that Mike's sold replacement locks. If it looks anything like the ones in my pic, I think there is a really good chance it can be re-keyed, assuming you have the pieces from the original lock. BTW, that particular one I picked up on eBay fits many different Yamaha's. It's originally from a DT400.

I rode the resto mod for a few miles, when Blake showed up to return some parts. His SR"500" is a quick darned thing. My 79 with a standard tank slightly richer than stock jets, mikes Dunstall style mufflers, went on reserve at 185 miles, most of that on hilly curvy secondary roads in Arkansas. I might put a gas can on the back and see how far I can get on reserve. I have an 18" front rim and tire when I compared trip meters with others in arkansas, we all gassed together, I was a 2-5 miles higher at 110 miles, than the others. I used some detailer and wiped off some bugs when I got back.

Put some miles on mine by going to breakfast then the Tucson Vintage M/C Riders Show and Swapmeet. Went home, had lunch and went on a ride up and down Mt. Lemon.

Marty, Mother Yamaha used that lock on many many bikes. XS650 and the XJ600 Seca II and amny more.
Mailman, Yeah , Mt lemon is fun to do and a place to get some heat relief during the summer months. Windy point and Ski Valley are my favorite places there.
