So im pretty sure my ignition is going bad. Weather it be the rotor, stator, brushes, i dont care ive wanted to replace it for a while anyway. Any input on what to get? Its an 82 with tci ignition. Im going to re wire the bike as well because my new frame will be here this weekend. Thoughts?

Rotor, Stator, and brushes are the Charging system..................Ignition is, points coil and condensers...............or a TCI

It's typical, don't understand or want to learn how to troubleshoot an old system to isolate what is usually just one component or even wire/ connection problem and think wiring and installing an all new system will be easier.

hey Daniel, maybe its time to stop questioning these guys motives and changing their minds on replacing these parts. Its getting to the point where the restorers can use the thrown away good parts to keep these bikes on the road without having to spend big bucks.............it may not seem like it to some of you newer guys but the XS650 is well over its peak and now the non replaceable original spares are getting harder to find.........

You have choices, Hoos racing has probably the most $ophisticated and accurate all in one system.
650 central or Hugh offer support so does Pete
then there's tc Broz and mikes XS

I have used and sold the Powerdynamo system for over 10 years they have been making these for over 19 years, I added a link. You can buy direct from them or I have them in stock. It's easy to install. German engineering at it's best. If you have any question you can email me at gary@hoosracing.com or call 563-940-3363 , Gary

Coming from someone who has replaced his stock tci and charging system, doing a few simple tests might not be a bad idea. Your looking at north of $600 to replace everything. What issues are you having?

I have to agree , if you have a late electronic ignition, might be worth repairing .

Idles for a little then dies. Let me also elaborate....I dont care much because i have a few grand laying around that i would like to throw into the bike. I dont find my attitude "typical". I want to have a well running xs. I dont care what i have to buy as long as i put it on and make it work myself. And if anyone needs stock parts to restore, like my charging / ignition system I wouldn't even make anyone pay. Put up the Shipping and its yours. All i want is some good oppinions. Thats thr beauty behind thesr old bikes. You dont have to use old parts.

I like my PAMCO W/ electronic advance and ultimat coil. Easy peasy instalation.Set an forget. Read DanielBlack's thread on Stella. His recent trials on the charging system. He moderised it with a 3 phase rectifier and a '70s era solid state Chrysler regulator. Though a '82 takes a different model of the same thing. That can be found useing the forum search.

Thread is coaxing a question?. Stock electrical 78e. Is Brush length really that critical ? Outer brush measures shorter, is that expected ? 11,000 original mile components. Thx, -RT

Thank you for not taking offence alex f...... I have seen better welcomes LOL.....
welcome to the forum anyway ! sounds like a guy tired of playing with it and just wants it to run right ! ...... Idles then dies sounds like dirty pilot jets in the carb to me....or the entire passage way.... typical on these things.
personally I don't care how much money you have to throw at the bike unless YOU do some work on it , or pay someone to work on it it will never be right again.... it won't fix itself,..... and the best action is fix it yourself and save your money !
I have an 83' Special which has the TCI ignition and it's so reliable I seriously doubt that the ignition is your problem ...Unless you've been running it on one cylinder with the other spark plug lead disconnected and dangling..... (that will fry the coil)
the system built into these bikes is darn near impervious ! not a whole lot can go wrong with a TCI system ...But some Have failed,... no doubt.
if You want to fix the bike there is a Technical section on this site that will show you how to fix practically anything and everything that could go wrong with the bike..... if you don't want to work on it then find an experienced Yamaha Mechanic that has experience on the XS650 and have him do it.
that is about your only 2 options....
Good luck to ya !
.....
Bob...........

If your going to change the charging and ignition system in one go you may as well try the PMA/CDI system Hooser sells. Non Chinese parts and an all in one.

Wasn't trying to offend............Your first post wasn't clear as to what was wanted and the reason why, there is so much common knowledge out there about the XS that is just plain wrong and a lot of punters make changes based on that.

Pics are welcome and enjoy
