Today was a good day for me to start taking the XS1 apart. Getting ready to take the engine out soon.
So somewhere in the past an oil cooler was added, and unfortunately they welded bungs to the numbers matching case for fittings. I want to eliminate the cooler fittings, and I'm going to assume that in order for the oil to flow through it, they must have plugged or restricted the port that passes through the case. Has anyone ever seen a cooler installed this way? I've seen them mounted through the cover before.

I've never seen one done that way. But, given a choice, that's the way I'd do it. Snagged a copy of your pic for my files.

You'll need to pull the right cover, then peek and probe into the front main gallery.

This pic of a conrod failure reveals the front main oil gallery to be a cast-in tube.

We discuss that a bit in this thread:

One item that would be concerning is the oil squirter in that zone. Looks like one of your oil cooler fittings is in the same place...

Ouch, there's some damage right there.
It's going to be interesting to see what piston/connecting rod configuration this engine has. While it has the original lower end, The jugs and head are from a later model. I have an XS1B engine that I have to check out and see if the head/cylinders are good. The plan is to mount those on the XS1 so it at least appears to have the correct setup. I believe it still has the correct cam, as it has the 4 bolt tensioner mounted to the 6 bolt cavity on the cylinder block.
