diy manometer vs. hands behind exhaust pipes

My old original mercury filled Carb Stix has a central reservoir shared by all 4 tubes. I'm thinking of building an oil one along the same lines. I've never had any problems using the mercury gauge other than occasionally the columns will show air bubbles in them. All you do is unplug the hose so the column drops back down into the reservoir then plug it back on the carb so it takes a fresh pull of mercury. I think it's pretty accurate. The slightest adjustment on the sync screw changes the column heights. With oil or mercury, the goal is the same - make the columns even or equal.

Pm sent Timemachine....

5T : I never got one of those they wanted way too much for them at the time, but the shop had one .... the manager wanted me to use the shop one but I prefured the Unisyn, i had so I syncronized a Kawasaki 500 3 cyl 2 stroke and had him check it he said WOW it's right on it
and about a day later he had a brand new Unisyn for his toolbox ! HAHAHAHA I thought that was funny ! its so small and portable it's hard to resist ! .....

hay Greeniehornet fella ! can you post a pic of your carb sync thing you made please . Thanks....
Bob...........

Sure. Here 'tis. 2 mason jars. Leftover vinyl hose bits. Hotglue. Did it backwards first, and had the long pipes reaching to the bottom of the jars. It's the short pipe that joins the jars, which runs to just above the bottom of the jars. The long pipes go down only an inch or less.

Less is better, I found, when there's enough fluid sucked into one jar to actually reach the end of the long pipe... and quickly travel up and into the carb.

Most of the pipe is half-inch, I think. I jammed smaller diameter pipe into the ends, which fit easily into the carb ports. Too easily actually. They weren't really tight, and I've wondered if that was part of my problem.

May well be. Got clamps?

Clothespins count? What am I clamping?

I was thinking maybe I should put some chewing gum around the hose, where it goes into the carb. Form a bit of a seal. That is, if I bother with the manometer again. This thread has taught me that not everyone uses them, and lots get along just fine without.

Thanks to everyone who responded! This forum is a wealth of information. And an amusing bunch of good guys, too.

I've been syncing with hands behind pipes for years on countless XS650s. I got the idea from "Farrell"s Shade tree Corner" here:
http://www.650central.com/fcarb_balance_technique.htm
The whole list of Farrell's XS650 articles is here:
http://www.650central.com/farrell intro.htm
and it's all linked from MMM's 650 central site here:
http://www.650central.com/
If it's good enough for MMM, it's good enough for me.

I had the pleasure of hanging-out with Farrell for an afternoon of riding, maybe 13 years ago, in Toronto. Nice guy. An equally nice guy - Lee - was visiting Toronto from South Carolina. We were all on an XS650 listserver. I would never have been able to fix up the Hornette the first time around, without the copious advice from the fine lads on that listserver. Now the Hornette is up and running again; with help from another fine bunch of lads.

here's a thred I started a while back asking about the same question.....
http://www.xs650.com/threads/carb-sync.48939/
the design that 2M has come up with is amazingly simple and super accurate and you don't have to try and Judge the movement of oil between the jars.....in the short tube....
the same thing can be made of yours very easily its just a bit diferent is all....
I wanted my containers small and not bulky so I made them out'a PVC pipe but you could just re use the masen jars as well
the jars are just to keep the oil out of the engine that is their only funtion with this design
having the Carbs in perfect Sync is very important to reduce vibration I have noticed...a concern for me as my hands go numb usually in a very short time any more..... my last ride my hands didn't go numb at all ...my first ride I didn't even get a mile and I did the sync by feel
.....
to each their own.... but I think 2m's design is the best out there ! ...and cheap !!!!!!

Update: Success!
Turns out the problem was my quick and dirty hack job on the manometer.
I tuned with the hands-behind-the-pipes method, and had it reasonably close. But I'm a chronic tinkerer, and have trouble leaving good enough alone. Started pulling over and making adjustments; which just messed up the decent balance I had achieved.
So I pulled out the DIY manometer again, just for kicks. Could *not* get even close to balance. Which finally lit a dim light bulb in my mind. I switched the tubes, and sure enough... the balance mysteriously reversed.
Manometer wasn't air-tight.
Made it air-tight, took the bike for a spin to warm it up, and plugged in the manometer. Almost balanced off the hop. 10 minutes of tinkering and the fluid levels stayed nice and even. Took the bike out for another spin, and it purred.
Well... it purred like an XS650. Couple of pops and a bit of revving at idle, which simmered down to 1200 to 1500 RPM after a couple of seconds.
Nice.

I had a set of those too, back when I had my XS750. There was an ad in the back of one of the motorcycle magazines , before the Internet , so the ad had a phone number you could call. I looked at it and realized the phone number had my same area code. I called the guy up and asked him where he lived? It turned out the guy lived just a couple of blocks from my house, but he said he made them and sold them from his house and he didn't want me coming to his house because his neighbors were already upset he was running a business from his home, so the guy met me in a business parking lot and I made the purchase like some clandestine drug deal.
" Hey man, you got the stuff?"
I hand him a $20 and he hands me a brown paper bag. Haha.

Anyway this is the real deal, and it worked great!

Although lately I've been thinking about getting me a set of these babies" Haha!

Man I'ed like a set of those too Bob !!!! WOW maybe buy 3 or 4 of them !!!!!:yikes:
...... Oh do you mean the guages ??? Humm.... I'll pass on those,.... the single tube one that 2M came up with will do me just fine !!!!!
hehehehehhehe !

But I'ed still like to TRY the red twins ! at least for an hour or so ! I bet they'ed work good enough fer me !!!!!!
HAHAHAH
