Another XS bought back to life.

Yamadude, This is what the Hoosiers are on. I always wanted to build a race car from scratch and went as far as building a lot of kitset models and was going to build a full scale version of one. But then I got the chance to buy a rolling chassis so I went that way. I've since fitted a Honda Vtec and mated it to an Alfa Romeo gearbox but that project is on the back burner for a while.

Welcome Lindsay - very nice polishing job indeed!

It sure looks like a '76 frame (or at least front end and brake set-up look like my Lucille) - but the mufflers appear to be the older "baseball bat" type - like quite early 70's to me.

The giveaway would be the LEFT side exhaust tappet cover - does it have 3 studs or 4?

Anyhow - we're delighted you've joined and look forward to updates!

Pete
The mufflers are some aftermarket set Pete.

There were a couple of areas on the motor where part of the bolt holes had broken away. They were fixed easily enough with JB Weld and a bit of fibreglass rod turned to the right diameter plugged in the hole. To stop the fibreglass bonding with the JB Weld I just turned the rod a little bit but often while the JB Weld was setting. Then to get a nice flat surface for the washers I made a tool with a bolt and a tap reseating tool ( I had one laying around). I turned one end of the bolt down so its a nice easy fit in the bolt hole ( meaning it can spin easily) and then just spin it with a socket on a drill .

I love it !
The V-Tec engine was a fine choice, a sophisticated, bulletproof lump.
Your fabrication skills are to die for.
As a fan of open wheel racing, I started a thread recently here in The Lounge in that regard.
I imagine that you are proud of Scott Dixon winning The Pole for sunday's race.
Freaky that he got held up at gunpoint at a Taco Bell by teenagers the other day. Ah, Living In America.....

Dammit - I'm comin' over! So many cool toys!

Just one question:

1) what subway stop is closest to "New Zealand"?

2) do you need me to bring any BEvERages?

OK, that was two questions - but my Mom always told me to not drop in on people without a giftie.

Well Pete ,If it's the fast food Subway the closest is Kaikoura, used to be 45 minutes away but since the earthquake in November its now about 8 hours away but if its underground transport you're talking about the closest we had to that was in the square in Christchurch which was actually an underground gents toilet but the locals used to love to send tourists down there when they asked directions to the subway. But that was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.
As for beverages , I've got enough to keep us going for a day or so but I am Partial to a Jim Beam or two.:)

Jamie, The CB750 is a K1 that I got in 1990. It was missing a lot of parts, the motor had been partially pulled to bits and was pretty neglected as it had been pulled to bits about 1980.At the time there was no internet to find stuff and I just put it in a shed for "maybe one day" A few times people came to look at it but decided it was past restoring. Then when I got the XS I decided to pull it out of the shed and work out just what I needed because despite its rough appearance all I could see was potential.

Yamadude, I went looking for your thread in the Lounge but kept getting side tracked with other threads.
Followed Scotts career for a long time now, and yes proud of him for the person he is as much as his racing achievements.
He didn't seem too fazed by the holdup, must have been living in America long enough now.
Have you seen this video of him in his early career. He was still at school and had to wear a pillow strapped to his bum so he could see out of the windscreen.

Superb film clip !! I've never seen that.
The floral pillow is hilarious, but also a reflection of the state of early racing of all kinds, where homemade "contraptions" and inventions of all kinds came out of the driver's garages, rather than today's "teams of engineers" sitting at CAD/CAM screens.

When I entered karting in the late 70's, home-spun fabrication was prevalent in the pits. Here is one of the helmet rests I made from barstock aluminum, safety foam and :D duct tape. It worked well.

Scott was looking good in final practice today, last time I checked in. I imagine that you've got live TV coverage of the 500 over there in NZ ? It is gearing up to be a great race.

Another parcel from Mikes XS arrived today and I'm pretty gutted with one item in it.Now ,I have spent over $2000.00 with Mikes over the last few months ( That works out nearly $3000.00 Kiwi dollars without counting freight) and to be fair most things I have been pretty happy with. Some not so much but the finish on this switch assembly is rubbish. If this had been the first thing I bought from him I would never have bought anything else.Actually the wiring loom I got in the last lot wasn't very good either. The headlight plug only just got to the steering neck.I don't know if there are other issues as I haven't really started on the wiring yet.

Looks really shitty. I'm surprised, frankly.
I imagine they will accept a return, and if you send them these pics, perhaps they might even reimburse your shipping. Their customer service is quite good these days. They respond pretty quickly.
Hope you have better luck from now on.

Lindsay, Taranaki, hardcore. Going to Blenheim in a couple of weeks. Granddaughters birthday and staying on for 3 weeks.

Tell MikesXS, their customer service is supposed to be good these days..............

Here are a couple of links to other aftermarket parts fr the XS and other period bikes of that era.

650Central. Can't buy on line. Need to talk to the guy and that is who he is. Things can be a bit dearer but the owner has extensive knowledge as a racer and the parts are good quality.

Frame no is a 76C..........Engine no 71B/F

Awwwww. sh!t. I'm so sorry that happened Lindsay. I bought that very same part for my '76 and mine is perfect.

Tackle them and get them to make it right.
