On a rural road, cruising along, come over a hill, a truck passes by, as i go over the top, a suv is turning left into driveway. Driver stopped for a second, time slowed, "oh good, they see me". Guesse not. They go again, i jamb the brakes trying to keep the back from sliding, driver stopped just in time for my knee to bounce off the right fender area, none of the bike hit the suv, just my knee, but sliding tires, and bouncing of a suv, threw the balance off. Prolly hit the ground at twenty mph. Slide 20feet on chip seal. The bike on its side, in 4th gear still trying to idle. Gas streaming from cap. I turn the key to kill it.
I stand up to take inventory of injuries.
Stand up pretty good, glad i was at least wearing a hoody, the sleave on my left hand rubbed off a good layer of skin, not deep though, knee feels ok, i think I managed to catch the bike with my left foot, as damage to bike is surprisingly minimal. I think the bike bounced off my foot.
The shift lever wrapped back around the peg, front left turn signal shattered and bent, some more little scratches on the head light ring, tweaked the forks, bending the front fender a bit, the left rear turn signal bent back a little.
The driver gets out of the suv and asks if im ok. I say well, im upright and not on fire . She approches me saying she didn't see me, and that she and her husband both ride and are very aware of other bikes. I assure her shit happens, just glad im ok.
Since the shift lever is wrapped backwards and stuck in 4th, i have to force the bike thru compression to the shoulder. Just as i get to the side of the road, another car comes over the hill. I can see how easy and how fast it happened.
She is visually shaken, i dont get angry and assure her im ok, nothing's broken, just the bike. I ask her to take my hands in hers, and assure im ok. She calls down to her husband at the house, he comes up with a crescent wrench, i also need to assure him im ok, we straighten out the shifter enuf to get it into neutral and it starts on third kick. I ride a bit down the hill checking brakes, throttle action, turn around, as i go by them i give a thumbs up, and make my way home 5 miles away. No hiccups, bike ran fine as usual, get to garage , shut it down, turn off the petcocks.
My foot looks a bit swollen, but feels fine. The next morning it was very stiff. I have poor circulation in that foot, so it always looks a little swollen. I wear compression socks a few times a week.
My hand, i hit it with hydrogen peroxide a few times, my god, that hurts like hell. Those guys that get real road rash with rocks and dirt ground in must be in absolute hell.
Im very lucky, and very grad i was wearing a sleaved sweater. I almost didn't. My injuries are more like a rope burn, than a scrape. Very lucky. No damage to her car.
I have a extra set of original turn stalks, just need a yellow lens.. need to get original shift lever off ebay, unbolt the front end and check for bent tubes, bolt it back up, and ride on.
Its not a matter of "if". Its a matter of "when".

Oh, yeah. The next day at the family cabin i got sunburned on my foot, and the same night, i was eating catfish and snapped a corner off a molar on a bone. Turned 45 last thursday, all this happened friday. At this rate, ill be gone by September lol

Oh no angus67. Sorry to hear all that news man, but happy you weren't seriously hurt.

Take care of yourself and keep that sense of humour.

Be well.

If you need a yellow lens I have a pair off the 1972 shown in the picture to the left.
One is rather faded and the other has some scratches but either one would at least get you legal again, also believe I have the shift lever while not show quality would work if yours breaks from being bent.

I could send some pictures if you are interested, contact me by clicking on the "inbox" and then "Start a Conversation".
Prices would be shipping costs plus gas money to get to post office, 2 miles on an XS650 so that's not much!

Heal fast, I'm almost 100% after my spill in my driveway a couple months ago!

Happy to hear you are not seriously hurt. Things can always be fixed. You are the most important part of this equation. Heal fast.

Heal well and if you put any credit in bad things happening in threes, you are now clear and out from the black cloud.

Ouch! You're a better and more tolerant man than I, Angus. The old proverb holds that trouble comes in threes; maybe you've had your full share for now, and can look forward to easy cruising for a long while.

Bummer man, Glad you're ok. I've been there and done that. I'm glad you and the bike came out of it better than I did. Shit does happen. I was pissed as my wreck happened. You're a better man than I. Although, the lady that I wrecked into didn't even get out of the car to look....

Angus, the shift lever can be hammered back into shape to look like new. Don't ask how I know. It's pretty soft metal. Oh, and start wearing gloves, if I may ;)

It wouldn't have mattered if I'd worn gloves. The sleaves of my hoody gave me I guess a rope burn? The sleaves just rubbed the skin off. Thanks guys.

Glad your OK Angus ! and YES you did get off Light ! very lucky feller !
I guess I don't need to say anything about protective ware here as it is very apparent from the hands and feet !
gloves would have helped ! probably would'a stopped the rope burn from the hoody sleeves !
it never ceases to amaze me how fast accidents can happen ! one second your riding down the road minding your own business and the next your rolling on the ground in pain ! i guess that's why they call them accidents ! LOL
just be thankful you weren't doing 55mph ! we would be sending you get well cards in the hospital !
that was obviously not your fault... but sense you were the one banged up.....
..... in retrospect what do you think was your Error ? not slowing down more ?
....glad your OK !!!!!!!
Bob.........

In retrospect........gotta live. We all take chances great and small. My 91yo gma manages to get out of bed everyday, my 7 yo niece goes to school.......and we know how that can go.

Wow for getting hit the injuries to self and bike were minor! I gotta ask, is the lady's insurance going to pay for your damages? Any comments about that drum front when you really really want to stop now?

Dang Angus67, feeling a little bad for you. So when I've scraped off some freckles and scratched up pretty cycles, its really hurt my pride bad.. Hope you are not beating up yourself too bad , Don't ! You said it, we gotta get out and live ! Your pretty 71 will be fine again and a scar.. eh, no biggie  hang in there.. & Hi everybody, Im off camping .. cycles touring all over the place

Be safe Time machine !!!!!
and laying it down happens to all of us sooner or later staying out of the hospital when it does happen is the hard part !
