Good going Ron!!! I am sure many will recall the issues I had posting photos here when I joined.

Anyhow - that bike looks to me to be a '79 or '80 XS650 Special and I suspect after a good wash, it won't look so bad. It appears that it might last have been licensed in around 1987...so, 30 years off the road. I can't make out the mileage but these bikes are tough as nails.

After a good wash:
- remove and clean the carbs and fuel tank;
- rebuild the brake master cylinders (front and rear) and likely the calipers too;
- new tires and tubes (these rot and are not safe after a few years);
- possibly new cables (clutch, throttle, speedo and tach (all together less than $80);
- remove and clean or change the oil filters (there are TWO of them) and a load of fresh 20W50 oil;
- almost for sure a new battery;
......and there ya go!!!

Keep in touch, ask questions and tell people what parts you need - and this group will have you up and rumbling in short order.

Cheers,

Pete

I sent you a response to your email.
1.bike has 21,962 miles.
2.the seat is hinged.
3.It has 2 into one exhausts,single muffler.
4.It has points
5.the heandlebars are not pullbike special style.\
6.battery cables are missing.those are real cheap since they are generic
7.positive cable-from battery to solenoid? Where is the starter and solenoid.Should be behind one sidecover.It has no sidecovers btw.
8.It does have a starter button
9.no shifter peg to push on to see if the motor is locked up
10.Since the peg is gone,cables are gone,chain is gone i assume the worst.i.e. primary chain broke, the engine locked up and this was a parts bike.Low mileage makes me think otherwise kinda.
11.I thought about using vicegrips to move the shifter peg splined connection to find out if the bike can be shifted
12.Once a battery is bought the key fortunately is in the ignition but the ignition circuit needs to be complete including fuses to see what lights up.if the fuse panel is gone i will be even more sure this was a parts bike.
13.it has an oil cooler mounted on the front downtubes.
14. 2 oil filters? Pray tell,why?
all input appreciated.

IXNAY on the tires.I am going to smoke them off, they should be good enough.30 years old.why wouldnt they be.

just checked some numbers,best as I can see. ltd 12/77.mad in 77,its a 77 model then.
only numbers easily visible are 110556.I would think a vin would be much longer.If the solnoid is a small square under the right sidecover then oables are on it.One is long,dissapears under the motor.It appears the starter is under the motor.That might be a ground cable.The other cable is short about 4 inches.It doesnt look like it would reach anything.I need to see if there exploded drawings her to better understand the motor.Ya'll(means all of you) might get tired of my posts.sorry.

Yeah - it is likely a '77-78 standard but somebody did some significant modifications to it as it has the later vintage cast wheels and rear disc brake.

The solenoid is definitely under the RH side cover. I'll bet most or all of the non-wear item parts you are missing will be readily available on this site at very low cost. I would give it a good wash, make a list and post it - and see what turns up.

Replacing the tires....I hope you're kidding about skipping that step.

Oh - there is no primary chain on these bikes (as is found on most 4 cylinder bikes between the crankshaft and the clutch). The primary drive on the XS650 is a big set of gears and they very seldom fail. There are two other chains on the bike though:
- the timing chain which drives the camshaft;
(it lives inside the engine between the two cylinders and the tensioner for it is the conical thingy sticking out the rear of the cycling RR barrel right under the carbs;
- the final drive chain which is very obvious since it makes the rear wheel go around.

Finally, Ron - I strongly recommend you download and print a manual. They are readily available free somewhere on the web and will make all of this MUCH easier.

YEEHA!!! I had no shifter arm with peg.I found one from a 96 goldwing,fit right on.The bike was in gear.I shifted down 3 times so it was parked in 4th gear.put a 11/16 socket with 3/8 drive ratchet on the crank and the motor turns over easily.I am totally stoked.Now I have to get the thing out of the back of my truck.cool.

Yes, very good. Does the bike have a kickstarter on the right side or just the splined shaft coming out? I just may have a few kick starters laying around here with the perfect patina to go with your new acquisition.......lol
