So I have a 77 650D, yet as pointed out, I have some special parts on it. Namely the speedo and tack housings. I have never had lights on the speedo side, so I went in and replaced the bulbs. Although it didn't seem to have any change, on my way into work today I notice that the lights are now working! So that nice. However, I have two different colors. The Speedo is orange and the tach is green. So that poses the question. What color should the Speedo and Tach be? I suspect that the tach is original 77 in special housing and the speedo may actually be from a special.

Hey Mackels, here is a pic of the stock gauges on my 77D. BTW 78E are the same.

I believe grn was from earlier year models. Wht or yellow for the 77. Skull could probably tell you for sure.

Just popped into a buddies for a Java. He has a 1980 Special SG. If these are the stock gauges, here's a pic.

I'm sure Skull will know but I wonder if country of origin might make a difference.

FWIW, according to VIN's my 77D is a US model and the 78E is Canadian.

And mine with no reason to believe they have been changed are wht/yel. Country of origin may have something to do with it? Or vendor swaps?

Mackles. Speedo is from a

On the Special and 79F gauges MPH was limited to 120MPH.

77D. Early 77D's still had the brake lining warning light. During the 77D model run that safty feature was removed from the bike.............5Twins has posted pics of the 77 rear hub with the brake lining switch bracket saw'n off from the factory.

Green..............Its not the light its the color of the face and rings around the bezel that create the green hue

on thinking about it............proberbly has a lot to do with the gauge cases as well

Great info Skull!

Those photos parallel my:
  • 1976 Standard (green instrument faces and green interior bodies which produces a green hue in the lighting)
  • 1981 Special (black instrument faces and white interior bodies - producing a white hue in the lighting);

Here are a couple of photos Doug:

First - the 1976 Standard - 140 MPH speedo (just before Canada went SI in - I think - 1978):

...and now the 1981 Special - 220 kph speedo (several years after the switch from British to SI units).

Thanks Skull! The casing on the speedo is white. Didn't have reason to get into the tach side, but you got me curious now. I'm willing to bet it's green.
So I'll never know how many miles are really on the bike.

I guess I don't need to pull the tach apart to see. It is consistent with what the seller told me. (The PO's PO took a couple 650's to get a solid bike) my engine and frame #'s match.

Excellent info there Skull, I've been farting around for ages with both speedo's and tachometers since owning my bike, last week after waiting for three weeks to get a delivery from the states I received both new OEM / NOS instruments late last week, not cheap either, speedo is correct for my year, tachometer, I don't konw

Old instruments, check the graduation in the tachometer, the needle popped off the speedo when I was 150 miles from home, so I watched it destroy the face plate coming home....wasn't happy about that
