Might close a deal on a 1977 XS 750.... Who has one and can you offer some pointers.
The bike is silver and in good condition. I would give it a "6" when comparing it 6to my XS650 se. This unit is classified as a touring modle with luggage, tail rack and crash bars front and rear.

The owner claims he does not have any trouble with second gear, the real issue that I recall from the XS750 se that I owned 20 years ago. I gather from talking to the fellow, the bike runs rough, idle's poor, which I assume is due to junk in the carbs.

The fuel tank has rust, which I hope to remove electronically.

Good tires and the seat is recovered. Missing a right side cover. The exhaust is new.

Anyone care to chime in....advise is welcome.

Sounds like a XS750 Standard - I love the look. I had one and the only issue was 2nd. gear popping out. There are remedies I've read that aren't too difficult to perform. Everything else basic refirb 101. And there is a lot of internet support. If you recalll I did my 650 in 750 clothes. If I found a chep one locally I'd buy in a NY minute

If you buy it I can give you a shit load of forums and parts source information. Let me know

Thanks for the information.

I have cruzed Ebay looking for parts and there seems to be an abundance of most everything I will need. My only real concern is can I unload this bike after I am finished cleaning it up.
With 3 bikes in the shed now, I am walking fine line with Mrs. Backroader, apparently there are other more important things in life than bikes.:wtf:

+1 on an XS750 of any stripe not being a great flipper bike. Much much better than a TX750 though!!!! I have heard complaints on getting all three sets of points timed. 77 is the last year for points?

I have two Yamaha XS750s, a 77 and a 79. My 79 is my favorite vintage bike to ride. Nothing growls like a triple.....of any brand!
Issues: Since 2nd gear has been mentioned I will add that over the years I have had 3 triples and have never had a problem. However, if it has been flogged you need to check it. By the way, my 79 has 26K+ and my 77 28K+. In 77 there were two models sold. The silver was the D model which should have been a 76 but was late being released. It had a factory 3 into 1 exhaust. The other was maroon, the 2D, and had two mufflers. Both 77s had point ignition. From 78 on it was electronic.
My first concern would be the bottom end. If these engines are run low on oil bad things happen to the crank bearings. If you can ride it and it runs okay, you are probably alright. I would never buy one of these bikes that doesn't run! Another thing is the primary chain. There is no tensioner so they stretch. That in itself is no problem, but after the chain gets about 10K miles it sets up a vibration at times that makes you think something is wrong. It doesn't show up on acceleration, it is mostly a cruising quirk.
Also as has been said before, the market is not strong on these. If you buy it, ride it. They really grow on you!

Thanks Gents...with the information I have gathered this bike will not fit into the show and shines next to this: (I wish I had kept my 78 XS750, it was almost as nice as the XS650.
