80 Special found me

Does it have the lock and chain in the lower rt side compartment? Try not to laugh too hard when you see it.

Yup chain is there! I also had a 83 V65 Magna that still had the chain. Title states was purchased new June 1986, last inspection and registartion was 2001 been sitting ever since.

OK I've got the carbs rebuilt and back on the bike, flushed out the tank new fuel lines and an inline filter, new vacuum line fresh plugs and changed the oil. Put fresh gas in her and she fired up on the 3rd rotation of the crank, sounds good no smoke no noise. Road it around the yard and down the dirt lane behind my house, shifts well and good throttle response:) I've got a runner. Changed out the buckhorn handle bars for a set of super bike bars ( I really dislike buckhorns). Looking at new tire and the polishing continues.

Does anyone know the lengths of the clutch cable for the early models standard compared to the later model special clutch cable. With the super bike bars being narrow and lower the clutch cable is too long and clutch pull is harder. Looking for a shorter cable. Thanks

2M thats a lot of info, something i would expect from the engineers here at work. ( I work in a engineering test lab) Very impressive research 2M.
That special cable can be used if you change the routing. Actually with super bike bars you about have to run the cable on the RH side of the gas tank to avoid too sharp bends.

Thanks Gary, I found your cable routing post with a little searching after I had posted my question. My cable has some outer case damage so I will be replacing it anyway.

Good Day ..do you have a local shop that can cut the cable to the desired length and service the end. ? We have one.. he'll usually do the work while you wait.

If I was looking for a custom cable I would go to these guys:

Used them when I was in need of a new brake cable for an XS400. Sent them an email asking for ideas and got fast reply. Ordered what they suggested and had it in a couple days. A few minutes figuring out the best routing, cut cable to length, soldered on end and was done in under an hour. Works just fine, price was very reasonable too!

The drum rear and the x-treme seat would make me think it's an '81. Of course parts can be swapped around.

The Special clutch cable is slightly longer than the Standard one (only an inch or so) but still works very well with low bars when rerouted. As Gary said, you must run it down the right side of the steering neck and frame. Move the throttle cable routing as well, over to the left side of the neck .....

Most of us use a Motion Pro replacement cable. Best place to get one is Amazon. At this price, buy 2, one to use and one for a spare .....

Yes, keeping the cable well oiled is very important. I oil mine once a season.

This is an 81 special. When i made the original post I had not seen the bike yet, PO stated it was an 80
The tube grab rail vs the cast one was also exclusive.
This bike has the cast grab rail, it has a back rest installed which has the same conture as the grab rail.

Thanks for the link, I just ordered 2 cables.

Even though it will be new, you'll want to oil it before install. They come practically dry. Those spray cable lubes don't work very well. They penetrate fine but only last a day or two. Regular motor oil works better. Hang the cable and dribble oil in the top a few drops at a time. It will take multiple applications over about 10 to 15 minutes time before it starts coming out the bottom .....

I like to use one of those paper cones they give away at gas stations. Poke the cable through the hole in the bottom of the cone about an inch and wrap some duct tape around it and pour some oil in the cone. Suspend it somehow till it comes out the other end.
