I must be getting old, I can’t get my eyes on the nut you are trying to access.

Edit: I found it in my Hans Paul manual!

Seeking some confirmation here: I'm fairly confident I've got the sequence correct, but the clutch boss sitting 1.5mm proud in the third pic gives me pause.

Yup - I agree with 2M Daniel (although he has forgotten more about XS650 clutches than I will ever know). :bow2:

The reason the boss sits proud by that small amount (around .060") is to allow the nut and washers to actually clamp the clutch hub onto the shaft.

If the boss sat flush, or was recessed by even a tiny amount, that vital clamping action would not occur and things would be able to rattle around axially - causing a lot of noise and unnecessary wear.

Anyhow - I think you've got it!

Per Ardua ad Astra!

Hey - what size is that clutch boss retainer nut....27, 28, 29 or 30mm?

TwoMany has stated that he has seen all of the above on various bikes over the years.

Thanks guys.

2M, I commend you, Peanut, and the OP of that thread on your perseverance. Clearer photos for clearer answers, eh?

All is ready for the friction plates to arrive. Working on a last stubborn patch of old gasket. Slowly getting back on the road...

29mm, Pete.

OEM friction plates arrived on Tuesday and have been soaking in oil since then. Dear wife was at the state fair this evening giving me a few hours with Stella.

All buttoned up, filled with fresh oil, test ride around the neighborhood was successful. Looking forward to tomorrow's commute.
