Anyone got a rear mag off the bike? I need to know the sprocket flange to brake rotor flange distance, pretty accurately. Working on the star wheel project and gotta see how much I'll need to do to mount them. Hopefully don't need to change anything but.. well you know how that goes.

I've got to go to the shop, be back momentarily.

5 21/32 give or take. The brake disc is still on it and the bevel is giving me problems.
If you need knats ass / dead nuts I'll remove and use some plate for an inside measurement.

Hmmmm...143.6 mm

While it isn’t always the case, engineering designers usually attempt to use even sized dimensions. I would have expected that the dimension would be either 140 mm or 145 mm.

Yup - understood WER. I just wonder if your more comprehensive measurement would be closer to 140 or 145 mm.

I'm not going to guess which way I erred. Holding a steel ruler against the rotor for stop, the ruler against it and third flush on the sprocket flange with just two hands and without my glasses who knows?

Thanks WER, exactly what I needed! I have one on madness but it's pretty far back in the shed. Will get it out and remove the wheel before
I start cutting spacers

All righty then! This won't be simple, :cautious: o_O I visited this a while ago but lost my notes so starting over. The star wheel is 4 9/16" or 116mm flange to flange, the sprocket flange is 70mm from center, on an XS spoke hub I get 80mm for sprocket offset so there will be a sprocket spacer and a rotor spacer. This reinforces using a lighter non xs brake rotor. Guess I will get plenty of learning time on the new to me lathe that snuck in the garage last week. Thanks for the help!

I'll show you mine if you show me yours...;)

Sweet! OK OK here's the skinny. I have an ancient south bend 9" I inherited from dad. Then last spring bought a grizzly G0602 off CL there were issues about not getting all the parts, but it was a step up from the south bend for sure I did turn several brake rotor spacers on it. That one left here in the back of a Subaru a couple minutes ago. Then last week I found and bought this;

haven't made chips yet but I'm about ready. This one has all the parts, yeah! Truth be told I'm a bit leery of it. It's one powerful lathe, the south bend would pretty much just stop if something went a little wrong, this one? nope screw up and something's gonna go flying. Quick change, gear head, power crossfeed. Gotta do some bench swapping, must of been a midget or maybe a guy in a chair? running it. The chip tray is only about 24" off the floor. "some guy" was turning wood on it........ Needed some sawdust removed. There was quite the disaster ordeal getting it out of the guy's basement, and up into my trailer.

Nice Gary! Looks like a keeper. Lets see some chips fly!!! :)

You guys are serious hobbiests! My garage isn’t big enough to hold all your tools.
My hats off to you! By the way Gary I saw your YouTube video of your hydraulic log splitter.
Impressive! That’ll save your back.

I like that old gal! I learned on one of those back in the early 1970s and it was fairly old then!

Pete

I've had this one since at least the early `90's. Does what I need but that flat belt drive does limit the amount of cut you can take off without stalling it. But that is probably good in a way as it prevents me from breaking tools! It's a South Bend Model A.

What makes me a little sick is where I retired from there is a nice old Sheldon lath that as of two years ago was in excellent condition all the time I worked there I was the only person who knew how to work it. I would not be surprised to know it has not been turned on in over two years. I just might have to talk to my old boss and see if there is any chance of relocating it to my garage. I know if it was just up to him it would be a done deal. But if he has to say something to his boss they will get the idea it is worth several thousand.

Another plant of the same company had a couple large lathes, two just barely fit on a flat bed trailer. Last I was at that plant they were sitting outside on that trailer in the weather!!!!
