Hello,

I am looking for a seat lock with key for a 78 XS E. Would anyone have one for sale? With all the chopper builds around, there should one to be found...
thanks!
Geoffrey

I'll let you know in a couple days as I have maybe two coming in the mail on Friday.

Just to be sure does the 78XS-E have the hinged seat or the lift off seat?

Just thinking however shipping to Brussels might be a deal breaker!

The '78 Standard seat is hinged, as I think are all the Standard model seats. The seat lock is a combo seat/helmet lock. Here's what it looks like .....

The mounting holes are countersunk and the screws used are M6 x 12 flat heads .....

This isn't the case for every model. On some, the mounting holes aren't countersunk and normal round head screws or hex head bolts are used. My buddy encountered this problem on his '80 Special II. He's lost 2 or 3 of these locks over the last several years. Part of his problem was he was using the beveled flat head mounting screws and his model doesn't call for them. The holes in his mount aren't countersunk. The head of the screw made barely any contact once tight, so obviously they weren't staying tight for very long. He has since switched to bolts w/ lock washers, and so far his current lock has stayed put, lol.

Due to my buddy's problems, I've gotten into the habit of checking the lock mounting screws often. Even though I have the correct flat heads in beveled holes, I almost always find them slightly loose. They seem to be more prone to coming loose than any other fastener on the bike. My '78 E was also missing the lock when I got it so this may be a common problem. This same part was used on several other models so it is possible to scrounge one. I got a replacement for mine off an XS500 .....

Geoffrey, you may find something more cost effective by placing a WTB ad on this site.

To add to 5twins post I have gone from the JIS screws to Allen or socket head screws in this application. I feel like you can get a little more umph when you tighten them. Plus a little blue loc-tite doesn't hurt.

Hi, thanks for the reply, as described in posts, the seat is hinged and the pics are correct. Let me know in mp what the cost would be. Thanks!
