Looking for a complete triple tree with stem for my build. Trying to get this thing figured out on my 72 for 35mm forks but it looks like its pretty tough so any insight or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

okay, looking for complete triple tree and forks now...maybe even a complete front end. Anything from 77 and on would be cool. let me know if anyone is trying to clean out.

You will need to swap stems (grind, press out, weld) or maybe use spacers to fit the 35mm triples to your 72. 70 to 73 used a stem about 1/2" shorter.

thanks Garry! That's what I've been reading. It seems that anything after 73 is about the same labor. Is there any one year that is truly superior or has its advantages?
cheers

pends on what you want out of the fork but anything after 77 is good, 77 is fine to but a couple of minor differences from later forks. Adding cartridge emulators, perhaps new springs and playing with fork oil level can make any of them better if you like control and handling.... of course figure on fork seals and probably dust caps or use gators.

If you are really after handling the later frames were considerably stiffer and stronger.
You will need a 77 up brake caliper too.

awesome good to know. also one more thing. assuming i got the stem from my 72 swapped onto a later (77-?) triple tree, would there be any issues with the bearings? I'd think I'd use the 72's bearings or would I roll with the 77-?...orr would there be some customization needed?
thanks in advance!

Bearings are all the same, the All balls tapered bearing kit is the only way to fly. Usually found on Amazon for about 32.00 shipped.

Several "makes it go smooth" threads on the install of the bearing.

Thanks, You guys have answered most of my questions, too. I also have a 72, and noticed, (from pictures), that the 73 top triple has clamps on it, and as most of us know, the 70 thru 72 only have the top fork nut to tighten down. ( what were they thinking?) Anyway, I was hoping to install the 73 triple top on my 72 to make it a little more rigid. Any suggestions, notes, comments?

Hey, Gary. Another question...
The triples on my parts 75 are set back about a 1/2" and set wider by about 1/2 to 3/4". Are the 73's different or similar to a 72?

73 are wider CL to CL but I'm guessing they have the same offset from the neck. I have a 72 73 and 74 I might snoop a bit this afternoon.

Baraboo? Saw it on a map. Middle of no where, it seems. I've been to Madison and Menomonee Falls once 15 years ago.
I guess it should be wider because I saw a picture of a stock 73 with dual discs. I've got a chance to purchase a 73 front end with the benefits of the upper clamps and possibly doing the dual discs in the future. Yes, I do have a complete 75, but I still want to keep the 72 looking stock without a lot of mods. It seems that all my gauges will bolt onto a 73 perfectly, but not a 75.
Then there are my tubes. They are perfect, no scratches or pitting. The 73 tubes are awful and the 75 tubes are just OK. Yes there has been some talk about mixing upper and lower tubes, so, if there are any delays in this winter's top end job, then maybe I'll dive into it.
Lastly, (yeah right), I'm this close to buying the 750 kit. Any thoughts?

Did you get your parts? I've got a complete front end for an '80 xs650 less handlebars. PM if interested in all or parts.

Well, I'm still up in the air, but I would like to see some pics. In fact, probably all would like to see some pics. By the way, I'm from Paramus. Just saw where Millstone is located. That's about 25 miles from the shore, eh. I used to spend my summers in Seaside in the 60's and 70's. I even had my 72 there a couple of times. The last time, 76 or77, I ran out of gas on the Rariton bridge at 2AM.
